View Full Version : Hadron collider, dangerous or not ?

I hope this is the right place to post this as it could fit into several categories.
I dont think its approriate for the conspiracy section as its hard science that is happening now.
The Hadron collider at CERN in switzerland is now finished. They will attempt in the next few months to create "mini black holes"
I did a search of this site and I didnt find any reference to this, if it has I apologise for duplicating it.
I have a zero physics background but having read all the assurances that there is "almost" zero risk, i am still uneasy in my mind about what they are doing.
As far as i can make out they are trying to find a "theoretical" particle that they think was created at the beginning of the universe. Some have called this the "god" particle , which I also find disturbing.
I cant see anything that can be done, or prepared for if this does cause terrible effects for this planet.
Are any of you guys concerned about these tests ?
I am not wanting to scaremonger just to get an idea of what other people think.
Many thanks,
April

Before the first A bomb was detonated there was a fierce debate about whether or not it would chain-fire the Earth to ruin. Some fool pulled the trigger anyway.
We'll find some way to destroy ourselves, whether its a black holes, senseless wars (family vendettas), or a genetically engineered bug.
Lean back, have a cuppa, and watch Dr Strangelove one more time. Not much we can do about it anyway.

Yep. What wy0mn said. Although I do have to argue with a couple of his points...
Since Adam and Eve were tempted and ate of the fruit of the Tree Of Knowledge, mankind has had an appetite to know all things; to be like God. This appetite lead to the study of Sciences which have benefited us greatly.
God will not, however, let us destroy ourselves as we are His creation. Only He can do the deed and it is promised that He will not. Remember the story of Noahs Ark and the Rainbow?
There WILL come a time when He gets a belly-full of our independence and decides to end it, though. He will not destroy us as a species. He will simply call home those that trust upon Him. More info can be found in the book of Revalations. That time is near. I am joyous and fearful at the same time.
Are you with me, Lex?
Wasn't it Slim Pickins who straddled the bomb and waved his cowboy hat as it fell from the bomb-bay doors? I love that movie! I sometimes have to slap myself when I feel the urge to play Wheelchair Basketball. 8)
We don't know how it'll all come down. It may be a man-made Black Hole. We're not supposed to know. We're just supposed to be READY.

Hi'ya Rob :)
Finish the MIL room addition to the shop yet?
This is a very wierd Spring for WY. We've been having rain by the bucketfulls! I've not been to the Ranch since last Monday or Tuesday! I'm running outta time to meet my cabin completion date of July 4th. Working 6 days a week now makes it difficult to get out there even if the weather co-operated.
Worked a half day today, sent home with full pay. Winds too high for safety. (Still raining.)
I'm doing my best to avoid religious & political debates with my online friends. As a matter of fact I've chosen cremation, so my one friend can be pall bearer. ;)
And yes, I do believe it was Slim Pickins. I gotta get that on DVD.

You ain't heavy. You're my brother. ;D
I don't often reply to posts on Sports, Religion or Politics either. This one just drew me in. He tells us to spread the Word, does He not?
Look for a PM soon.

I’m reminded of my days of being a stage hand. I was working a Christen conference as the rigger, when I came across some ladies hanging a sign over a spot that people would be sitting under. The sign was rather heavy and they were hanging it some little strings they picked up at wal-mart. I told them they could not do that but I would be happy to hang the sign for them safely. So this woman got all upset telling me how they put the sign up by themselves and it was just fine. After some argument I said it was not safe but it was my job to hang it and I would do it safely. She then told me that it was a Christen conference and God would not let the sign fall. So at that point I kind of got a bit annoyed so I said God put me here to deal with your sign.
Anyway my point is sometimes it is your job to speak up and tell someone that they are about to do something stupid. You can’t just think God will take care of it.

Hi all, thanks for your input on this thread.
Thanks Wy0mn, your reply echos my thoughts in that "someones going to try it anyway"
I do believe that a court case has taken place into the dangers of the experiments, but i dont see how risk can be assesses with so many "unknowns" in the equation. AH well, as you all say it may just be another way we can damage ourselves.
Thanks for the notes and pms from the religious angle, these are all points that I am thinking about and so I will try to put my thoughts in order and post separately under the religious topics board.
Best wishes,
April

Dear Lateaprildawn,
Great! Now there might be a way to dispose of the un-recycleable things around the homestead like old gasoline! Just let it fly down the homemade, small-scale black hole! Neat, ain't it? Every home should have one!

HEY Theunboundone,
Just realised I have already got one !
Things go into it and are never seen again, only the foolhardy would venture to explore it.
Its called a handbag ;D

That's funny! ;D ;D ;D
Maybe this new man-made black hole will bring back all the missing sock-mates that get lost in the laundry. It'll be a money-saver on the wardrobe!
;D ;D ;D
