Hello all.

I'm a guy who likes to make lists. (a lot of which are nothing more than a waste of paper... ;)) I'm always making lists for this and that. The other day I while walking through the basement bringing in firewood I glanced at the wall-o-supplies and it got me to thinking.

If what ever emergency you're planning for where to happen while you sleep tonight,, how would you make out? In what areas are you lacking and in what areas are you alright?

Now so we can all learn from one and other list a few things for the audience at hand:

Hows your food / water?

Heat?

Medical Supplies?

Ex cetera...

You get the idea. Feel free to list what you're worst case scenario is and how prepared for it you think you are and how you could be better prepared.

I'm gonna list mine but I've got to build up the courage to be ashamed first.

I make a lot of lists, too! I keep (most of) them in a 3-ring binder. What's in my truck, in the wifes van, in our BOBs, etc. You should only feel ashamed if you don't know where your list' are. :P

Food and Water... Check. We also just bought a Berky Lite. I highly recommend this little unit.

Heat... Check. Two kero heaters, two Coleman propane camping heaters, a dozen oil lamps, my wifes millions of candles, firewood and an old wood stove that I'm almost done restoring.

Med Supplies... Check. Wife is a LPN. We've got 2 large tool-boxes full of everything from gloves and mask to Trauma kits and syringes.

I also like to keep plenty of hand tools around. The tornadoes on Tuesday reminded me how useless power tools can be. Always keep rechargable things charged!!!

Foods good/water ok for a short time but need to stock more

heats good (plenty of options)

Med supplies- decent but need to improve, could get by though

All and all need more water and more ammo (can never have enough). I think we'd fare pretty well but I'm constantly trying to improve our stock. never get complacent! Complacency and Apathy are our enemies. Preparedness and BOB are our friends! ;D ;D ;D

My goal is a two year supply of food and water. Water being the most difficult and requires some kind of filtering system thats dependable (open for suggestions).

Homesteading Dad,
I mentioned the Berkey Lite and I highly recommend it. I bought mine from www.lehmans.com for a little over $200 after a lot of research. It seemed the best deal for the money. The only downside is the cost of replacement filters. The good news though, is that the filters are good for approx 3000 gallons.

OK here's the run down.

Ammo: we can hold down the fort for some time and put meat on the table, however we're really short on both components and raw ammo for the M1A

Water: Being that we have a cistern we really only need to have means to filter our water, we also keep about 5 gal of beach on hand that will allow us to treat a lot of water and we can always boil it too.

Food: we've got 2-3 months supply but I would lean on the light side to be safe. 1 month no problem but I wouldn't plan on much longer than that.

Heat: We can never have enough fire wood (cut and seasoned) we're really lacking in this department, we're going to focus on this a lot more this summer

Fuel: need to stock up lots more in this area (both LP and gasoline, gas mostly for the tractor and chain saws etc.)

Meds: We're lacking in this area too. We're going to add more vitamins every month and general pain killers and such and keep a one year supply on hand and rotate them out as needed to keep them fresh.

Here's what we've learned from this. Although, we're better prepared than any of our family or friends we're really not ready for much. We're going to make a list of our expectations and try to knock off even just one thing a month and go at it that way. That way we can "eat the elephant one bite at a time".
