View Full Version : Family BOB suggestions

Hello all. I've been working out my BOB and I've kind of run aground so to speak.

If it were just me I'd do fine with the "standard stupid stuff" BOB. However, having a family of 4 with another on the way I find myself trying to decide what to pack. (Oh, by the way, all of my children are 3 and younger)

I know standard 3 day supplies for all will apply but beyond that I kind of don't know where to go. I was thinking of making like 3 different function BOB.

the first would be the HOLY CRAP LET'S GET, BOB. It would have all the basic necessities for a quick dash and grab type scenario. It would have just the basics for everyone for 3 days. Of course the clothing would change with the seasons as would some other supplies but basicly it would be a very bare bones pack.

The next step up would be the, IT'LL BE HERE ANYTIME LET'S GO, BOB. This pack would consist of everything that is in the first BOB but would have enough goodies to allow for a longer stay away form the homestead. Things like the tarps would be up graded to the tents and sleeping bags etc.. More food and general housekeeping supplies too. You get the idea.

The first two bags outlined here would be packed all the time and ready to go. Yes, I could take them both at anytime but the heft and bulk of the second would make it counter productive for a quick dash.

The last bag would not even really be a bag as it would be the, HERE IT COMES AND WE CAN'T COME BACK, BOB. This is an absolute worst case scenario plan and would consist of, well, everything. We would take everything that it would take in our opinion to completely start over. Of course you can never plan for everything (you know what they say about the best laid plans of mice and men) but if you're reading this you can understand where I'm coming from. Yeah that's right we're all drinking the same Kool Aid ;)!

Does anyone else have any thoughts on how to stream line a family BOB or am I simply over thinking this whole thing?

Lost,

Rather than go into a ton of detail, I think the best and most detailed information I could point out to you would be to read the book "Patriots, Surviving the Coming Collapse" if you haven't already. It covers in outstanding and realistic detail all of the question you will have and are asking about now.

I wish BWH would add this book to their selection of books for sale. It is very popular and informative book.

Based on what you've written, it appears that you're looking at one do-it-all bag for the entire family. Have you considered spliting the essentials up into seperate bags, one per person? This would allow you to place the relative items per person in their specific bag. Smaller bags for the children, of course, most likely backpack style to allow them easier carry. As for the soon to arrive baby, maybe the necessities for that family member could be included in your wife's bag.

I've got 2 BOB's, one in each of Sweetie's vehicles. They are both small ALICE packs and would do for 3 days. I keep my personal BOB in my truck tool box and it is big. Weighs 75 lbs and is a full US military ruck and will support me for at least 7 days. While I would not want to hump the bag unless things were real bad, experience reminds me that it is better to have something and not need it than to need it and not have it. Consequently, I'll decide depending on the particular SHTF event just exactly what in my BOB I'll need. It's the American Way, more is better.

;D

Thanks all for the help and input. I suppose I'll have to chew this one over a little bit more. I'll keep you all posted.

Todays blog is right up Lost's alley. A huge link filled presentation that pretty much covers anything you could think of.

WRTN,
I gave a cursory glance to survivalblog.com so maybe I just didn't look far enough, but I wondered what the acronym TEOTWAWKI stands for.

Lost,
You mentioned that you'll be having a younger crowd to entertain. Keep in-mind that they will need 'familiar' and 'comforting' items included. Think back to when you were four and what items you remember fondly. I'll bet Candy Canes are a fave? They're on sale after Christmas, are an energy source, don't expire and kids are mesmerised by the stripes.
Multi-purpose I guess! :)

This is an awesome point that I had given a little thought to but had gotten lost in the tangled mess of my cerebellum. I was only thinking about keeping the kids alive (that is the main concept here but if they can't be reasonably happy then there's nothing worth fighting for?) I really had not paid much attention to this area.

Thanks
