This is our first experience castrating a one month old bull calf with an elastrator band. I have some concerns about whether or not I succeeded in the task correctly. What I was expecting to find was a couple "peanut M&Ms," but what I found was more along the lines of a "mars bar" - if you catch my drift.

I'm concerned I may not have succeeded in bringing both testicles down before releasing the band. What are the concerns I may have with banding only one or partially banding a testicle. How can I determine whether I did it completely. If not, how can I repair the damage. The calf doesn't seem to be in any pain 12 hours after the procedure.

when you say found...you mean with your hands before you put the band on I assume?

sounds like you did it right to me...

12 hours later, he's numb...much like 12 hours after a wedding.

Yes, with my hands before I put the band on.

I appreciate the assurance; but the reason for my concern is that it seems like the band went on in the middle of the "mars bar."

now I get it... how old was this animal?
telling how and doing are not the same.. get the band up high. beside the body.and also, did you check to make sure ithe band is still on?

in eather case I think you will be alright...can you pen him up close to watch him? if it were my first animal, I'd do the same.

nex time,I'd Cut them off and be done with it.

He's 5 weeks old today. The band appears to be still on. I'm keeping an eye on him.

I'm not sure I could do as you suggested. :-/

just spray with an antiseptic/numbing agent.. wait a few mins.. and cut. they don't even move.
