I've been searching everywhere for a candle resource that doesn't involve beeswax. I've just rendered a bunch of deer lard and am eager to try making candles with it. Any ideas? Can one make candles from just animal fat? Will it smell like burning deer?

Rolling on the floor laughing my a$$ off ! { ROTFLMAO }
Kicking myself for not thinking of this !
After reading a stupid page found when I Googled “lard candle” I realized it is very possible to do this!
I have not tried this, YET, but will as soon as I can dig out my candle wick material.
The candle would be to soft to stand and the heated oil would flow away from the flame and wick
BUT,,, If we used a small canning jar {or empty tin can } and suspended a wick from bottom to top then filled with the hot rendered oil {not to hot - don't want to break the jar } let cool and “set” then it should work fine.
Yea, it might smell odd, but what the hay' they can leave the room {without a candle !}
Way to go kldickinson1 !!! *I wish I would have thought of it first !
If you beat me in trying this ! { I often forget to check this thread } drop me a PM and let me know how it went .

Carla Emery's Encyclopedia of Country Living has a section on using tallow in candle making.

long time ago a friend of mine made candles out of mutton tallow. They were beautiful, the smell made me want to chuck up.
