Howdy
There is a thread on the Ruger lever 44Mag carbine. Looks to be a good platform for a low power scope brush gun.
Ruger also made a auto loading carbine in 44Mag that looked like a Mini 14 in a lot of ways, and had a rotary magazine like the 10/22.
Was that ever successful ? Even mildly successful ? Were there any glaring problems with this model ? One of these might be a good lower budget hunting gun. Unless they are real hard to keep running........
Any experience.......... ?

Had a friend back in Idaho that got one for his wife years ago. She used it to kill a spike buck elk! I didn't get to shoot it myself but my understanding is that you need to load it with full power loads to work the action, and avoid using lead bullets that might plug the gas port. However, I routinely shoot my M1 carbine with cast lead and have had no problems even after 50-100 rounds of cast lead ammo. Wish I had one!

I have and have had several, they just seem to show up here.
The actually have a tube magazine and look more like the 10/22 than the Mini 14.
Good brush gun, but I always had a problem with the bolt closing all the way in sub zero weather. So of course it won't, nor should it fire.
I would guess that not too good over 100 yds or so.
If y'all are intrested I could post a pic or two.
Found this, not mine but a lot of info;

Your rifle is the "old style"
Have shot one of those a few times. They work good.
The new style, "Dearfield Carbine" does look like a Mini 14 with open top action over the bolt, and a magazine like the 10/22, only bigger.
From the info you posted, I am going to presume your cold weather closing problems are 2 or 3 things. Dirty where the locking lug goes. Where the bolt cams in the carier. Or where the bolt carier/op rod seats against the gas piston. Dirty, sticky gas piston. They show how to disassemble the whole thing.......
Good luck

Wbk,
Thanks for the heads up, I guess I didn't know they even had a new one out, I know that the carbine style I have has been discontinued.
Will have to check these out, as I have been lusting after the Henry "Big Boy" lever action, in 44 mag, but hey, you know.............
I sure you are right about cleaning the action for smoother operation, and I'm sure that my FIL, old school, didn't help with the gun oil, "If a little does a little good, a lot will do a lot of good".
The link I posted does have good info on cleaning, wouldn't have found it till we are having this discussion.
I guess, for me when it's time to get down to serious hunting, IMHO nothing beats a bolt gun for reliability and consistency.
When it's time to head out the door, 99 times out of 100 it will be with one or the other of the "girls",( Elvira or Morticia), Ruger Model 77M in 7mm mag.
But,
With the addition of the "Louisiana box blind",( Port-a potty on a tower), a shorter barreled rifle is handy-er, hence the search.
Leaning towards using a Remington Model 600 in .35 Rem at the moment, or the H&R Handi Rifle in .270.
Too much oil in a cold clime will cause any kind of gun to sieze up, especially automatics.

Yup, need to make sure you have the proper lubrication for the temp, something like Royal Purple works well but there are a number of other cold weather lubes out there.

Doesn't look like they are making them any more, not listed on their site.
They are different than the older ones.
This was a new one on me, so thanks for the input, I'll keep my eyes peeled.

The story goes that the Ruger 44 Carbine was dreamed up right after WW2 . Lots of GIs like the M1 and wanted to hunt with it backhoome but the 30 cal wasn't much good for anything back home except plinking- short range, so Ruger made the 44M carbine untill it was discontinued in 1985 by the company..
Obviously ruger like the M1,, 10/22, 44m, mini14
An interesting side light is that orginal 10/22 was manufactured as a way for the 44M carbine shooters to have a cheap way to practice, the 10/22 outlived the 44M.
If you go over to the GunsAmerica (http://www.gunsamerica.com/) site they have a few for sale occasionally, prices are generally reasonable.
