Hello,

Here is my question.

I bought some Winchester White box 7.62x51 ammo, 147 gr bullets.

Normally I shoot a Federal Gold Medal Match emmulation (Sierra 2200 168gr over 43.8 gr IMR 4064 with a Federal Gold Medal primer) in my .308.

What I want to do is pull the 147 gr bullets and use them and the powder to load up some Garand loads. My question is: Is the powder in the store bought factory loads OK to use in the Garand.

I'm not absolutely opposed to just dumping the store bought powder and using some IMR 4895 or 4064 in the Garand loads, but it seems a shame to waste it. Not as much as a shame as wrapping an op rod around the nearest tree, though.

Thanks,
Rick

DANGER......DANGER........

I can't say this loud or often enough.

DO NOT, repeat, DO NOT try to reuse factory powder...........

DO NOT, try to reuse factory powder.......

What the public can buy as reloading powder is called Canister Powder.

What the factories use to load new ammo is bulk powder...... They are NOT the same.

There is a reason the factories have a multi million dollar laboratory to load factory ammo with. I knew an old guy who retired as a chemist from the lab at Federal Cartridge. Was able to learn a lot of small details from the guy.

Best advice is to shoot the factory ammo as is. Reload the brass with an established recipe from a reliable reloading manual.

Please do NOT become a local news headline.

Be careful, good luck
Wyo

Thanks for the good advise Wyo.

I'll just dump the factory powder and reload for the 30-06 using some IMR-4895 and the 147 gr bullets. (of course, me and the boys will probably make a little pile in the back yard with the factory powder and torch it off....boys will be boys :o)
