I turned 17 this May, and I decided to take the plunge and enlist in the Marines. I swore in on June 8th, and I ship out for boot camp June 7th next year. I currently don't have an MOS, because I need to get registered at my new school before I go back down to San Antonio with the paperwork. However, I have already picked Military Police, because my dad wouldn't sign the papers unless I had more than just Infantry School.

However, life threw a bit of a curveball at me. I scored a 99 on my ASVAB test (perfect score). The recruiters are entering me in a selection for a $220,000 scholorship through the Department of the Navy, and a path through Officer Canidate School. They are doing it whether I want them to or not, so I'm going to try for it.

I am currently working on getting in better shape, so hopefully I can ace the Physical Fitness Test with a perfect score.

Scout this is tremendous news. I'm so proud of you. Thank You with all my heart for serving...

The 23rd Psalm... The Lord is my Shepherd

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:
he leadeth me beside the still waters.
3 He restoreth my soul:
he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil: for thou art with me;
thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies:
thou anointest my head with oil;
my cup runneth over.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life:
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

Hi Scout,

My son just went into the Army as an officer (2nd Lieutenant) this May. Through a complicated maneuver, he previously enlisted while he was in college in ROTC, but only went through basic training and got assigned to a unit for a while.

So anyway, he knows what it is like to be a private, as well as an officer. He says he really likes to be able to voice his opinion and actually have it be considered. He agrees that it is *much* better being an officer.

Sounds like you will do well. So you have another year of high school to go? Can you join a JROTC unit? It would be great preparation for you. My son loved JROTC, it was a nice community of friends, and it taught him a lot about leadership. And taught him the proper form for push ups and sit ups, etc.

It would also be nice if you knew someone in the Marines, that you could converse with and get advice from.

TIA for your service, Scout. We owe everything to our brave military!

Good luck and some advice from someone who has been there. MCRD 81.
Get in shape now it will be easier on you.Work up to running 3 miles at a faster pace than a jog. Do wind sprints too. Sit up's and pull up's.
Remember in Boot Camp.....the key to Graduation, is Motivation. It's just a game till you Graduate, don't let the DI's win. After Boot Camp...piece of cake. Always strive to be first and to to your best always.

Scout - as a veteran who just went over 20 years and getting ready to head back overseas next year, I'd just like to say "Welcome" and "Thank you".
