View Full Version : Vacationing to Utah
We are thinking of taking a vacation to the Moab, Utah area. Just two of us, no little ones. Good idea? Bad idea? Opinions? Suggestions? I've already had one person tell me there is nothing to do and it would be boring. I uh, doubt but I would like opinions from those who have been there or live near there.

"Nothing to do?" Well, that depends.
Hiking, river rafting, canoeing, fishing, swimming...
Utah is an amazingly beautiful part of the country. The rock formations are stunning, the water clear and often cold, the mountains majestic, the people warm and friendly without being intrusive. Don't be surprised if you are sitting in a restaurant and the couple next to you strikes up a conversation, or if your motel people seem overly solicitous - that's just how they are. There are old West museums (indoor and outdoor) that have real wagons and equipment, not fabrications.
Our tire went flat in the parking lot of a Wally World when we were staying in one small town overnight - late on a Saturday night. We put on the donut in the trunk of the rental, limped back to the motel, and Sunday morning, the motel clerk had found a 'tire place' that opened up early for us and got us changed and on our way within an hour.
I liked Provo, breathtaking views and stunning skies. I liked Park City in the north, and Salt Lake downtown was soooo CLEAN and tidy and neat, not scrabby and rundown. Most Utah towns I've been in are kept neat and tidy and clean - and I've seen people lean over while walking and pick fluttering trash up and put it into a receptacle further down the street. What I found totally amazing was the "benches" - the carved-out steps in the mountainsides that were done when the glaciers receded, and that last til today; stepping down to deep valleys and racing rivers or huge lakes.
If these are the things that you like, you'll love it. Of course, most people thought I was crazy - vacations apparently should be Las Vegas, Disney World, or the Bahamas, with lots of excitement and colors and things going on endlessly to excite the mnd and body to extremes of delight. But to really connect with both people and nature, Moab may be just the place for you.
Awesome place for trail running as well.

I live in the Provo area, and visit Moab once a year.
The Green and Colorado rivers, jeep safari's, Dead Horse point, Goblin Valley. And over a dozen other places to go.
All very beautiful country. Hot, yes.
