Hi ,

I am new to this board. I live in Northern WI.
I raise Dexter cattle and Boer Goats. I have 2
dexters that will calve this summer and one Dexter/
mini hereford cross that will calve this spring. I have a
short legged bull named Brutus. I had to give him a big name since he is so much shorter ;D then the ladies. I
also have 15 boer goats at this time. 6-8 will be going to market on Monday. I will be selling everyone this
summer I have developed an allergy to hay this winter.
I have had animals for 20yrs and never had a problem
before. Talk about weird. My son leaves for college
this fall so there goes my help. I guess I will buy cattle
and goats in the spring and sell them in the fall. Don't
know if that is to profitable but have 25 acres of pasture I can't let go back to weeds. I could plant
more apple trees and berry bushes . THe deer would have a great time with those. Take care.

How sad you are getting rid of your animals! I wonder if it's just some kind of mold in the hay this year and will be gone in a year? I am so thankful I don't have any alergies beyond penicillin and that's pretty easy to avoid.

I have a Dexter cow and her Free Martin heifer calf. I got them in October. The calf (T-Bone) was born last May. Daisy is 3 years old. Her first calving was last year and she had the twins. Did fine. I bought her "open" except I am not so sure... She's looking more and more pregnant to me and no cycles... The bull was residing at her prior home so there could definitely have been an "oops" which I am very glad for.

So it's my turn to start fretting. Haven't much experience with this birthing stuff. ;-)

Today the sun was out so I was out with them during lunch. Her udder looked huge!!! Uh oh - that's a sign... So I am checking her out and T-Bone saunters over and has her lunch! So now I worry that she won't wean T-Bone and T-Bone will slurp up the colustrum. More research!!!

Maybe you can keep at least one cow or goat! Can't imagine getting rid of everything...

Becky - I am so sorry to hear about your allergies! I hope like Debbie that it is temporary.
I'd be happy to buy the Dexters off of your hands, but it will still be at least 6 months before we get set up and WI is too far away from where we will be. Darnit. Wish I could help.

Have you tried eating a lot of local honey? That helps some times in making the body immune to allergies, because the honey is made from the same stuff people are allergic to.

Well, whatever happens, I hope you don't have to give all of them up!

:( :-[Hi GUys,
I wish I didn't have to get rid of everyone either. I have had the goats for 2yrs. ANd the cows for 3. I just bought Brutus last Spring. Got all the babies coming and now this.
My husband used to feed them for me alot but he just
lost his route her in our town and now drives 50 miles one way to go to work. :-/ May be things will turn around
My husband could get back in town if the driver that bumped him of his route retires. I have a gentleman from MN interested in the cows so they could all stay together.
I don't eat honey much but could try it. I am allergic to a lot of medicines so don't like to take allergy pills. Deberosa your cow does sound kinda pregnant. My cow woulnd't wean her
first calf but she was not bred for the next summer. My husband said she would kick the old calf off when she got closer to calving time he thought. Don't know for sure. I finally had to wean the big thing by locking her in the round
pen. It took twice though as soon as I let her out she started sucking again and thecow started producing milk
again. Locked her up for a month the last time. Have a great day. ;)

Hmmm. I'd almost as soon eat her early than fuss with the weaning process on such a big baby! I'll have to think on this one...

How I wish I lived closer. I would love to have more Dexters. You might try posting them on the Dexter forum. Maybe someone there would give your Dexters a home.

Isg,

I did get a reply from a gentleman in MN. He was waiting on getting some more pasture for the spring and said he was very interested in the whole herd.
I hope he takes them the older 2 have been together
their whole lives.
