I have always been a jeep fan and was wond ering how practical you folks think a cj2 with pto would be for a small homestead. Im not talking about completely replacing the tractor but doing many of the smaller chores. Are pto equipment readily available?

you could say i'm a little bit of a jeep fan :)

the problem with old jeeps.....is that they are old. Not to say they cant be had in good condition, but you will have to pay for it, regardless of whether it was all original or restored.

accessories can be had....but they run a pretty penny as well. However if you can do some fab. work, you could retrofit a lot of modern stuff to the rear PTO if you get one with that option

you could buy a lightly used small tractor for half of what you'd have invested into a jeep thats in good enough shape to be a work horse.

I had a '46 Cj2 with a center PTO....had been used for spraying an orchard before i got it....was a real money pit. ended up selling it because I didn't need a third jeep projects.

specifically what chores would you have in mind for the jeep?

maybe a small vehicle like a Deere Gator might be a viable option?

I am good with mechanics and fabrication so that isn't too much of a problem but money is...I was thinking the light work the tractor would still be doing like mowing and digging post holes. Heavy stuff is relegated to the real tractor.

If all you had was a Jeep then perhaps it would make sense to multi-task with it. My experience with projects like that is that I spend as much time tinkering with setting up to do a job as I would doing the job. In other words, let the tractor do the tractoring and the jeep do the jeeping.

Use the pto to run a winch - but use caution: a pto winch could get your little jeep into a bunch of trouble because some of those pto winches can pull you straight up a tree!
