I'm trying without success to remove the castle nut on my Springfield M1A. So far I've used "Break Free" and my castle nut pliers to no avail. I got the nut to move back and forth maybe 1/16". Bent the pliers and messed up the jaw notch beyond repair and fabricated a punch attempting to "tap" the nut loose, again no luck. Anyone ever had this problem with their M1A, if so HELP!

The castle nut is held in place with a small set screw. Did you remove it? Also, cheap castle nut pliers will give up before the nut does. I got mine from Numrich.
The bayonet lug was ground off the flash supressor on mine, and being an old soldier I need a bayonet, and had no problems swapping mine out after I bought the pliers. I too tried to turn the nut with a drift and it didn't work.'
Anyone who has an M1A, or any milsurp weapon, or is a veteran should bookmark this site: www.m14tfl.com/upload/
There's a bunch of good guys over there who are glad to help. It's a clean site and they don't put up with shenanigans.

Thanks for the "comeback". I found the set screw on the top front of the sight last night - duh!!! Re-bent the pliers, refiled the jaws then re-casehardened - man what a pain but hey I got the nut off, the new flash suppressor with lug on and the new pig sticker is mounted. Yeah, I'm on the m14 site as same user but don't post much but they do have some good resources for ammo. Again, thanks.

I'm rice pady daddy over there as well. As far as I can tell there's only two copycats, one at militaryfirearm.com, and one at a fringe site having to do with the 1st amendment.

RPD - Just got back from the range, wanted to make sure everything is OK after repositioning the front blade. Still holding to 1"-1.5" at 100 yds - can't seem to get any tighter with these old eyes. I'd like to mount a scope but the cheapest Smith Enterprises has is around $250 which seems a bit more than I'm ready to lay out. Then when you throw in a decent Leapold at or about $700 :fie:

If you're shooting military surplus ball, anything 4" or under is par. The groups you're geting are excellent. I shoot off hand using a hasty sling (not going to find a bench in combat conditions) and consistantly hit a copy paper box at 100 yards. Why a copy paper box? I get 'em at work, and if you'll notice they're about the size of a man's torso.
I'm too old and arthritic to do sitting, kneeling and prone just for practice, but when the chips are down I don't think I'll have a problem.;)
