If you administer boticide or Ivermectin to control internal parasites in your horses, how often do you do it?

Here is what I do... Being a cold weather area for me with frozen ground etc...

I make sure I worm after the ground has frozen for good here in November with either a good paste ivermectin or Iverease food additive which is pretty easy. I then wait about 6-8 weeks and worm again with the same thing. This should take care of any remaining bots... remembering that worm meds are hard on the system you may want to add some active cultures or probiotics after you worm... I then give the horses a break til march/april when the ground starts to thaw... I will worm with a non Ivermectin wormer first then 2 weeks later I will worm with either an Ivermectin or Quest wormer (make sure you know the weight of animal to administer the right Quest)... you may also want to start the year off with the new Ivermectin Gold Tapeworm control... then every 8 weeks I rotate Ivermectin, Ivermectin, Quest... so...

March 1st- Any apple flavored feed additive
March 15th-Ivermectin gold
May-Quest
July-Ivermectin
Sept-Quest
November-Ivermectin
Dec/Jan-Ivermectin

You can strictly use Ivermectin for all worming rotations but I come from a time when you needed to rotate wormers and I just would rather be safe then sorry... best case scenario on a low number horse is to have at least 2 pastures which you can rotate and break up manure in pasture one while pasture 2 is being used. If you have the luxury and want to use the manure for fertilizer after you worm your horse keep them in a dry lot for a few days, examine the poop for large worms, but discard it as you don't want any wormer residue just to be safe in your garden...

If you live in a non freezing area worm every 8 weeks and that first 3 wormings I would worm with the apple Parantel Pomate type of wormer 1st, then Ivermectin, Then Quest, Then Ivermectin Gold... make sure you are completely worm free and settle back into the every 8 weeks Ivermectin with a once a year Ivermectin Gold routine. Reason for the apple flavored type is if your horse is chock full of several different types of worms and you kill them all you can make your horse colic cause all those dead worms will flood the gut at one time, but if you kill off a couple strains laike large and small strongyles first and get their numbers down the second worming will be less traumatic on the horses system... If you have any further questions please feel free to PM me and I can also give you my private e-mail there as well...

Best of luck with your horses!
