What's the best way to de-stink a dog that's tangled with a skunk? Phew!

Tomato juice. And then a good bath.

Time is probably exactly the method as most other ones (tomato juice et al) unfortunately are not much more than tales and unsubstantiated rumor.

Our neighbor had a great old black Lag that was a veritable skunk shredder, would demolish them to patches and remnants of their former selves in record time, it was full speed ahead and damn the torpedoes! And after years of trying all home remedies that were proffered, no mater how ridiculous they seemed, it was time that always did the trick. The dog did get to the point that after dispatching one of the critters he would go down to the river and bathe all on his own. He would get good an whet and roll in the sand and repeat as many as five or six times. Sometimes go back and do it again later in the day or the next day. This helped some...

I did find this remedy on Google: LINK to Article (http://www.aaanimalcontrol.com/skunksmellremovalrid.htm)

How to get rid of skunk spray odor smell.

So. You or your dog or even a part of your house has been sprayed by a skunk, and now you want to get rid of the smell.

These tactics WILL NOT work very well:

Bath in tomato juice
Spray with lemon or orange citrus
Masking agents like perfume or Fabreze

How do you eliminate the odor once you have been sprayed by a skunk? Well first of all, you or your dog should have known the warning signs ahead of time. A skunk will give many clear signals before it sprays. If threatened, it will stamp its front feet, arch its back, and shuffle away. If you don't leave right away, it will turn its posterior toward you, raise the tail, and release the smelly musk, a sulfur-alcohol compound, from special glands near the anus. This spray not only stinks, but burns and can cause temporary blindness if it is sprayed directly into the eyes. Since you didn't take heed and got sprayed, here is how to get rid of the smell:
Here is the secret recipe that WORKS. Mix the following:

1 quart 3 percent hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
1 teaspoon liquid soap or dish detergent
Mix these together and bathe ("shampoo" in or rub down) the spray victim thoroughly.
Be sure to use this mixture immediately after it is created, as it is unstable.
Rinse with tap water afterward, and repeat if necessary.
For spray in the eyes, flush with water as soon as possible.

If you can't go to all of the trouble of buying hydrogen peroxide at your local drug store, then a 2% vinegar solution will help a bit. But please, don't bother with the old tomato juice tactic unless you want to smell like skunk + tomato.

This works VERY well. Just de-skunked out dogs last week. We have come to rely on this formula as our pack of "dummies" (God Blessem') repeatedly get sprayed by skunks. You would think they would learn after a few times.

The myth busters on tv did a show on de-skunking a dog. They tried several methods and found out that Tomato juice and time did the best

My big dummy, when let out for her evening constitutional, actually chased a skunk right into her kennel. The skunk acted predictably once cornered, and not only was the dog a mess, but I had to scrap the wooden, hand-built, insulated and heated doghouse!

Went online and found the same recipie that tufhelp posted. It did work, but required repeated applications. Part of the problem was she got sprayed right in the face, which made it hard to bathe her around her eyes and ears. Even with the baths, it took a few weeks before she was allowed back the living room!

As a fur trapper for 44 years, I have had my share of sprayings, and have had dogs sprayed as well, this is the solution that most trappers use to descent pelts that are a little strong, it does work, sometimes a second application is necessary.
