How many of you make your own vinegar. I make my own apple cider vinegar. It is really pretty easy. I have a Jack LaLane Juicer and I run my apples through that and store the juice in a 5 gallon glass jug. I put a napkin over the jug mouth and let the juice work until the juice quits fermenting. I then strain my juice through a clean dish towel, put the juice back in the jug & I then add some Bragg's unpasteurized vinegar and let set a couple of weeks or more. I usually divide the vinegar into gallons & seal well. I store my vinegar in my basement.

Hey, why buy vinegar to make vinegar? LOL Sorta defeats the purpose, doesn't it? I use to make my own cider, then what I didn't drink, turn to vinegar. But, if you save a bit of your cider vinegar you can use the "mother" from it to put in your new vinegar. That sorta keeps it going without having to buy vinegar.

Yes Paul, I know. But in order to start my first batch I wanted the vinegar mother and Braggs has that. Depending on wild organisms to make vinegar can give you indifferent results. I would rather buy a quart of good vinegar that contains the mother for my start. I only use a small amount of that for 5 gallons of homemade vinegar. I think that is a pretty good value.

I use the same procedure to make rattlesnake vinegar. It's vinegar made frome watermelon rind. It gets it's name from the Georgia diamondback watermelon.

how does that rattle snake vinegar taste and what do you use it for? never heard of it.
would love to make my own cider vinegar, I am just lacking one ingredient, apples.
I used to live in applecountry and had more cider thanw e could use, the vinegar did not taste too good. I think springing a buck or two for a good mother is a good idea.

Rattle snake vinegar taste like a really mild vinegar kind of a cross between rice wine vinegar and apple cider vinegar. It is after all the juice of watermelon rind so it has a little sweetness, I don't know how else to describe it. some one asked me once if you could make vinegar from cantaloupe rinds, I don't think they have enough juice, but you might be able to make it from the juice of the cantaloupe itself.

never made it into wine, just use the juice from the diamond back watermelon rind (or any thick rind watermelon) add some mother of vinegar, or raw vinegar, put it in a jug with cloth over the top, it needs to breathe. Let it set in a warm spot until it is vinegar.
