Though this topic is a few months old, I thought I could put my two cents in.
Fels Naptha is a brand of bar soap made by Dial.
Here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fels-Naptha) is a link with more information, including a laundry soap recipe.
From what I've read about making laundry soap, if you cannot find Fels Naptha, Ivory soap would also work.

Autumn is right :) Fels Naptha is just bar soap from the dial company but it's bar soap specifically for laundry. Ivory is for skin and doesn't clean fabrics quite as well.
Here's the Homamade Laundry Soap recipe I use
1 Bar Fels Naptha soap
1 Cup Borax
1 Cup Arm and Hammer Washing soda (not baking soda)
Grate the Fels Naptha as small as possible and mix all 3 together well. (can grind together in blender) Store in airtight container.
Use 2 to 3 Tablespoons per load. For soft water and delicates, use even less. It doesn't suds up but it's strong stuff and cleans filthy work clothes with ease.
I can't remember where i got the recipe originally but I'm so thankful for it. It's amazing stuff and costs very little to use.
Add your own Lavender water as softener and you have it made.
Another thing i like is to make some St Johns Wort Water to spritz the sheets with or add in with the bed linens in the wash. It's very calming and restful.

This soap recipe was in Countryside Magazine. Although it was put in water on a stove. I tried it, but couldn't find the Arm and Hammer soda it called for that you list. I had to use regular arm and hammer. I couldn't tell you if it worked or not.
Does anyone know how much to use of this dried version in a side loader???

Zote is another brand of laundry bar soap that can be used in place of fels naptha soap. The same basic soap making idea is going to be the same as bathing soap, but using a bar of soap designed specifically for laundry like Fels Naptha or Zote will make a better cleaner. Skin soap isn't the same on laundry.

You can buy it from the Dial company or from www.soapsgonebuy.com .
I don't think you can subsitute Fles Naptha.
