View Full Version : Re: Dark cornish chicks have arrived
They are cute! I'm looking forward to hearing how they turn out. I will be ready to start butchering my cross rocks in a couple weeks. They are really growing.
Well, today I dispatched 6 of those nasty cornish cross chickens. Deb, you were so right about them being nasty. I will be glad to be through with them. I intended to do 12 today but my back would not let me. I may try to do 6 more tomorrow after church and that will leave 13 which will have to wait 2 weeks because we are having a big family get together on next weekend. How are the dark cornish doing? I have decided I am not going to order special chicks to butcher but instead I am going to raise dual purpose chickens(I do anyway) and let the banty hens hatch out eggs for me and then butcher what I want to and keep the rest. This batch has broken me from ever doing this again.
I should have read this thread first as it answered the ? about the pipes. I think Roy has some metal conduit around here so wondering if it would be too heavy. I also have at least half a roll of chicken wire I could use on it.
Today we finished butchering the cornish cross chickens and I am so thankful to be through with them. Unless the "SHTF" I don't think I will ever butcher chickens again. Not only is it a nasty job but my back is killing me. After about 2 or 3 it is all I can do to keep going let alone stand up. I think I am going to get rid of all my chickens except the ones that lay colored eggs. Those eggshells are thicker than others and peel easier when boiled. I am going to build a smaller chicken house and downsize my flock. I am really grossed out by the butchering of those nasty chickens
I have a few chickens I am planning to butcher just to thin the flock and get rid of the kinds I have decided not to continue with. I thought about the shears but was not going to the store so I could buy them but I will before I try these others. I sure would like to know more about the method you were talking about. It sounds a lot better. How do you get the skin off the legs? I did skin them but I did it as I was cutting them up because they were just so nasty I just did not think I could eat the skin. I did notice I had trouble cutting the skin below the joint of the leg. I don't think, no, I know I will never try to butcher that many chickens again even if I manage to butcher these I have. Roy did help me or I would not have gotten it done.
Thanks Deb. I'll definitely give that a try!
