what is the most accurate 22 LR in anyone's opinion up to 100 yards?
what is the most accurate 22 LR in anyone's opinion up to 100 yards?
I've seen this question about "all out accuracy" hashed out a few times before. And most times it ends up, by "actual users" of factory NON target guns, Remington 40X, Winchester 52, or an Anschutz at the top of the list, and then some factory gun that's "rebuilt" for accuracy...
If i was going to buy a 22lr tomorrow "for accuracy", it would be an Anschutz, as they build the "size" 22lr i prefer. I bought the one i have in the 70's, for just under $100.00 and i have nothing but good things to say about it... Anschutz 22 rifles are legendary for their accuracy.
BUT, we are splitting hairs here, as CZ's, Savages and a few other 22's are known to be quite accurate, and at a lower cost.

The most accurate for a blue collar dock worker (me) is a box stock Marlin Model 60. Of course, you could always take a Ruger 10/22 and put $200-$300 worth of after market parts on it to bring it up to the level of the Marlin.

Other than the Anshutz rifles, I've always loved the old WInchesters. I've had several 75's and 52's over the years, and they've always been tackdrivers. The 52 is a bit heavy to carry around, but the 75's aren't all that bad. When Germany unified, Davidson Imports brought in some E German Olympic trainers made by Anshutz. They weren't marked with the name, but were stamped "Suhl", which is where Anshutz are made anyway. If you can find one of these gems, I highly reccomend them. They came in a leather case with HUGE peep sights and a target from the factory. Wish I'd never sold the 2 I had....ugh.
Out of the box Marlin's aren't bad at all either. I've taken several and given the trigger assy a good polishing, and the same with the barrel using JB Bore polish. Both will do wonders for them. I have an old 75 Marlin that shoots better than any new one I have ever tried. Got that one a few months ago on a trade for some lumber lol couldn't pass it up. 10/22's are kinda iffy right outta the box, but lots can be done with them. I've had a few as toys with bull bbls and volquartsen triggers, but it's a fair amount of work and $ investment for a .22. I'd rather stick with something I can just work with out of the box, or an old one like the Winchesters I mentioned.
As far as ammo, try something "target grade" out of what you are shooting already. CCI Green Tag shoots well, as does PMC Target, both on the lower end of the price tags. RWS makes some incredible target rounds, but they can get a bit pricey. Stay away from cheaper ammo like the yellow jackets or thunderbolts, they tend to be pretty inconsistant, and some semi's don't like to feed them well.

My CZ 452 is the most accurate .22 I have ever shot.
My 10/22 is more fun to shoot but not even close to the accuracy.
I want a Henry with an octagon barrel real bad.
Anshutz are way out of my price range for what I need a .22 to do.

For ammo, use Winchester Expert or the like. It tends to outshoot Eley and Tenex ammo.

thanks for all the good info and keep any ideas you might have coming. got a Ruger 10/22 but have been eyeballing a marlin model 60.($ keep me from the CZ and Anschutz) sounds like quite a few of you have had good luck with the marlins and they are in my price range.

Accuracy is in the eye of the beholder. If you have a good eye a steady hand and a lot of practice one can be accurate with just about any 22 but for sure you have to beholden the rifle first , pun intended

Marlins like any other 22LR are picky about ammo brands. Try a variety till you get one it likes.

I am not the world's best shot but I sure love my daddies Winchester 67. It has the blunt forearm so I guess it is around 1935 or so- It was mom's first aniversary present to dad.. Haven't done it in long time but even I at one time could get 3 inch groups at around 60 yard. Iron sites. That may not be great by some of you guys standards but good enough for this old man.

If you are looking for really good shooters, Marlin's Micro Groove Rifling makes a big difference, and I'd stick with a bolt gun if you already have the 1022, it will give you an edge on plinking. The modle 60s sure do shoot good, but have jamming issues if not maintained wonderfully and then it is still no guarantee. Savage's little bolt guns they are putting out now are quite wonderful to shoot and very affordable.

The only truly accurate out of the box Ruger is the 77/22. I love my Ruger 10/22's but they just cannot hang with a 77/22 in the accuracy department.
The most accurate current .22s are probably the Anschutz, Cooper and perhaps Kimber bolt guns. Not too far behind are the CZ 452s. There are probably plenty of quite accurate guns, after break-in and with ammo they like.
One of the fun areas people like to explore is building their own version of an accurate Ruger 10/22 using aftermarket parts. The sky is the limit with what you can pay. You can build a 10/22 to challenge an Anschutz, and by the time you finish, you have invested enough to probably buy an Anshcutz.
Semi-autos actually have a couple of advantages over bolt guns. Follow-up shots are quicker, and you don't have to break your position to operate the action.
