question my grandson posed and i had no good answer -

he knew that safety of linemen working on the grid was the reason a grid disconnect feature was mandatory when using a whole-house emergency generator - but then he asked about the danger to linemen from those systems using home solar or wind power systems that run your electric meter backwards since they seem to contradict the mandatory disconnect feature for generators -

i had no answer for him - HELP ?

Grid-tied inverters have anti-islanding protection built in to prevent energizing of the grid when the grid goes down.

I do know that here, an individual is NOT allowed to install their own grid-tie system. They have to let the utility employees do it, because they say that if not done correctly it could endanger lineman working on the line....

I have several neighbors that have large whole house generators, and they had to have the REC install them.

Here, I do know that if you install it incorrectly and a lineman is injured, or worse, you can be held responsible...

Humm.
we loose power at the lake ( lake of the ozarks ) a lot . winter before last it was for 7 days.
DW is there alone now, so I put in a no break whole house generator. It was installed by private contractor., Paul. I never thought of that . There are generators all over the lake area since the big ice strom of a few years back that took everything out for weeks..

Most installations only required utility inspection and approval.

It depends on where you're located and who your utility is. Ours is REC (formerly REA) .... a coop. There rules are usually a lot different than a public utility on many things. The last one I belonged to required that the do the installation.

If you would like some light reading Article 690 section III of the National eletrical code covers disconnecting means for photovoltaic systems
