Wine Cork Ideas? [Archive]

We have probably a bushel of old wine corks--the real thing, not the new-fangled plastic imitations--and now are searching for original concepts for their use. Christmas gift ideas would be especially appreciated.

What do YOU do with your old corks? Ideas, anyone?

Thanks for the photos and ideas! We have a lot of corks and my wife and I were just discussing what to do with them! I especially like the serving tray idea. Did you use a picture frame for the tray?

I just came from Michael's, our local crafts store, where I found some 10x20 4-level shadow boxes--on sale, yet. Adding some handsome handles is going to turn them into wonderful display trays for those corks, following the picture Eranice posted. Accompanied by a pair of nice crystal wine glasses, they'll make fine Christmas gifts for some folks on my list.

The serving trays turned out very handsomely, indeed. Hubbest says they look fittin' to be sold from a high-end boutique.

I found I had to size the corks first, to make sure my pattern came out right. Hadn't realized until then that corks come in different lengths. Also found that the back to the shadow box fitted better if I shaved off a lengthwise fraction of each cork. That left a lot of cork detritus and dulled my Ken Kershaw, but the results were worth the effort.

Serendipitously, the pattern I devised left a hole in the center of each diminishing square . . . a hole that perfectly accepted the top of a champagne cork. Makes a nice visual accent.
