This was an experiment to try and keep adult hens from eating the medicated starter put out for chicks. At the time, we were trying to let the mother brood the chicks. They are simple cages, made from weld-wire and j-clips, with a vinyl strip to cover the exposed, cut edges of the wire. The top opens, using j-clips as hinges, and can be latched down. The only problem is that the cages need to be set under cover to keep adults from climbing, perching and pooping on them. The keets we tried them out on are so small, they ran through the mesh.

Bee Pipes, I don't know a thing about building cages but my husband, Roy builds them all the time. I don't use medicated starter with my chicks but my real question is why are you using an antique canning jar for a chick waterer? I collect them!

Yeah, guess it's an antique. Pretty simple minded, eh?

We have mostly wide mouth jars for canning. My wife had a few of these, and I use the ones that don't have lids. I got a feeling if I were to break one, I'd be bunking in the chicken house too.
