these tough little horses evolved here from various montian and moreland breeds brought here from the british isles over a couple of hundred years early in our history. they are almost gone but slowly recovering.

I'm sorry I'm just now getting back here. I guess I forgot to set up email notifications.
When I was growing up, My aunt & uncle had a 17 section cattle ranch in Nebraska. My uncle was also a TB trainer & breeder. I spent time with them so TB & QHs were the norm until an Appaloosa mare came into my life. I also added an Arab mare & gelding. I really thought I had found the breed that I was meant to be with...until I dove head first into the wonderful world of Spanish Mustangs!
They have a personality...a sense of self. I'd always heard that they bond with their person but didn't really believe it until my horses showed me personally, just how true that was....more than once1
Every day they surprise me with something new. I take a lot for granted until a neighbor or fellow horse person tells me of a frustrating experience with another breed. I stop & think about what they've said & realize that those things never happen with my horses. I know...it's hard to believe.
There's tons more I could say...maybe you could add to it ponyman.
longshot, are the Newfoundland ponies the pit ponies?

hey WR sorry its been a whhile since i posted here on this thread, stuff you know.
the Newfoundland pony is not the pit pony those were Sable Island Ponies, the Newfoundland Pony did do duty in the mines at Bell Island and at other sites on the island but for the most part were the mainstay for the lumber woods and for the fisher folk in the gardens, woods and hauling fish, seaweed, and just about anything you could think of for self sufficient communities cut off from the world by distance, the sea and the winters here on this rock in the sea.

I think their intellegence, hardiness and the fact that they bond with you so hard is what I love about these Spanish Mustangs. Their thought process is different then other horses and until you are blessed to have one as a partner it is hard to discribe! Just last weekend I was out brushing the boys and Scout, my sm appy was soaking it all in. Meanwhile Shooter and Rocket my 3 year old uncut boys started playing a tad rough and instead of getting out of the way, Scout took the brunt of getting banged into because he didn't want me to get hurt because I was on his other side and I backed off out of the way, Scout looked at me, saw I was ok and then tore after those 2 and broke up the scuffle and then came back for more brushes!
More then once I have been showing people the horses out in the pasture and a horse will walk in between me and them and then just gradually sidestep me away from that particular person. They are a great judge of a person and what is in their heart!
They know when there is an animal in the woods well before I ever would if at all.
They come running to see you with a call and if you want a rush walk out to see them in the pasture, start loving on them, scratching, talking and then start for the gate or home or wherever... walk fast, then trot and then run... pretty soon you will have the whole herd running beside you and it is awesome to be able to stick out your arms and potentially touch horses on each side.
I truely think they are the Horseworlds best kept secret and it is an honor to have them in my life!

My daughter has a Spanish Mustang and he is just the most lovable thing ever....but we used to have one that was just as miserable as a trapped hornet.
He didn't get along with any other horse and wasn't particularly fond of us humans, either. Never could figure out what his deal was.
But this one we have now gets along with any other horse, dog, cat, etc. but especially enjoys us people.

Sometimes it is because they get started too late and some just never really bond and although when they have a job to do they do it but don't want to get babied afterwards... but generally they really take to humans and want to be with you and be your best buddy! Tell me more about your daughters horse!

Well, he's black, proud, intelligent, loving, and his only vice seems to be shying from the electric fence. He got tangled in one and stuck for several hours when he was a yearling, poor thing. If we talk to him gently as we lead him, keeping a TIGHT grip on the lead as we go through the open gate, he's usually pretty good.
She's had him for two years.

What a great partner for your daughter to have through life! He sounds wonderful!

My son has been after me to get him some mustangs. And I do mean "some". Our family has been horse poor more than once.
