Back before there were chemical dewormers they used to deworm horses with tobacco... does anybody know how much tobacco you should give to a horse to kill the parasites and how much would be too much? What types of parasites do they kill? I was just thinking how easy it would be to just grow your own dewormer since everyhorse I have known just loves tobacco. Any other natural dewormers that actually work?

From http://www.thehorse.com/Parasites/Parasites0104.pdf
"Tobacco was another popular home
remedy for internal parasites, and one that
some horses readily ate. But although nicotine
does have some anthelmintic properties,
Kaplan notes that it’s extremely toxic
in the doses needed to kill worms. “Just
giving a plug of tobacco isn’t going to do
anything, and the correct dose would make
a horse quite sick,” he says."
Some people swear by feeding their horses Diatomaceous Earth but there is no clinical evidence that it is effective as a dewormer and there is a possibility that it can be harmful to a horse's respiratory tract. The best and safest dewormers are the chemical anthelmintics on the market.

Hi ponyman
I remember reading that Hopkins & natives used any bark from the poplar, aspen, cottenwood trees as a de-wormer. Since I read that, I was told that sycamore was used also.
