Hello,

My wife and I are thinking about buying a couple of acres in Cooper, Me. We are wondering how the locals like the place.

Did you decide to make the move to Maine? I'm not a native Mainer, but my father is from that area. My husband and I also drive that way often to visit his parents in Canada. If you're still contemplating it, let me know and I'll give you any info you'd like!

Is this place owned by a veteran and has an 'unusable' camp on the land?

I tried to enter an essay lottery for the above place in Cooper. I scoped out the aea online and thru friends. Be prepared for very small town life. It is remote and the income level in the county is quite low and there are very few jobs. Most people travel 3-2 hours for work. Also it is swampy moose country so you need to toughen yourselves to black flies and mosquitoes.

I would have loved it but there weren't enough entries in the essay contest for them to award it.

Still looking for a few acres in Maine. I'd like to buy now and have it when I retire (hopefully in three or four years).

We're not looking exclusively in Cooper; but we would like to find a rural area somewhere not too close to a metro area.

Thanks for the replies! :^)

Are you a commercial fisherman? :D

Cooper is almost Canada! :)

Pretty area, but as mentioned, it is pretty remote, even though it is close to the coast.

You might like to research western Maine. Real west..... Like NH. ;)

Just kidding, the western foothills of Maine is very nice country and a little more economically active. There is plenty of open land, yet there is access to good road infrastructure, etc.

As long as you are willing to deal with the cold and don't need to find work, you would probably be very happy with northern Maine.

Most people think of Bangor as "northern Maine," but Bangor is actually only about halfway up the state. There is much rural land up here, and it's not very expensive, compared to other parts of the country, or even the southern part of the state.

You would likely find that anywhere in Aroostook County would be suitable, and parts of Washington County (which is where Cooper is) might be okay as well. Cooper deorganized a few years ago, so it's not even a town any more, and I believe there are less than 150 people over there. It's closer to the coast than most of Aroostook county.

Stated more concisely: I think you'll find that land prices up here are more than reasonable.
