Here it is folks...my new home, and soon to be an urban homestead.

Here's a front shot from the main street.

Garage and part of side yard.

Part of the rest of the property,on the end of a dead end street.

Here's rest of the property.

There's a fair amount of space inside the privacy fence, that's where we will keep the dog and put up the clothes line for starters.

So.....what do you think? After all I've kept you in suspense for a while now.

Leera, that looks great!. what are your plans?. I see theres a good size plot and being as you said 'urban homestead'...what are you allowed to do, or not as the case maybe?.

I plan on doing as much as I can without breaking any local ordinances....

Our eventual plans will be to add solar panels to the house, along with a tankless hot water heater,I'd like to add passive solar as well, but not sure how well that would work as far as location....We're also going to put back in a wood burning stove in the lower level of the house, and add a 1/2 bath down there too.

We will eventually replace the heater in the garage that the previous homeowners took out too.

The empty lot is going to be the garden area and small orchard....there are already a few fruit trees there, they just need a little TLC to bring them back around I think.

I am going to use about 90% edible landscaping for the yard and around the house.

There are three trees that are dying of Emerald Ash Borer infestations, and we will have to take those down....

That is a very nice place. Really good that it is on a dead end street.

Finally..... new pics. LOL I know you must be excited. I remember the feeling. But, you've had the keys, how many days now? ....and I didn't even see one place where you started busting sod to get your fall garden in! LOL

Congrats and good luck.

LOL Paul..... the tiller is in the storage unit and that will be the last of the things we move....gotta get everything out of the mobile home first....

There is a patch of Walking Onions in the lot that I would like to try and save.In the pics of the lot where it's not mowed there used to be a garden, the fence charger is still there, that's where the onions are.

But my new garden will be a bit to the right of that area.I plan on doing all raised beds, but I think for the first year,it might be out of my budget.

When we looked at the property a few months ago,the entire left side of the empty lot was flooded from heavy rains, the right side was high and dry.....Came back again to look a few days later and the water was all gone.....

Be watchful of the lower floor when it rains hard and such that there are no leaks which are common in the midwest. They have some very good sealers out on the market now which they didnt have years ago when we had the problem. Last thing in the world you want or need is mold!
No probs down here though as number one--whuts heavy rain? [ha]
Rare that we see a split level like up there.

Leera,

You won't have to worry about trying to save the onions. They will take care of themselves, .....believe me! LOL... However, the easiest way to "move" them is to take the new sets and plant where you want the new onions. I love my walking onions. I really like cooking with them. You'll enjoy them, too.

Leera,
Congratulations on the new digs. Looks like you'll be able to get a bit of digging done there. Good setup with a family type yard with the garden away from the house, but not too far away.

Btw.... what are walking onions.

It's really a shame....that these beautiful 50+ year old trees are being killed off by an infestation of a bug that's less than an inch long....

Congrat's on the new home. Nice place with a fair amount of room. Sad to say the ash killer is already here.

Btw.... what are walking onions.

Actually, there are a couple types of walking onions. In my neck of the woods they refer to them as winter onions. They can stay in the ground through the winter, and come back up in the spring. They are great at producing a lot of onion sets and will reseed themselves every year.

Leera, that place looks wonderful! Happy for you.

(Interestingly, for some unfathomable reason, around here the building code won't let you put a heater in the garage. I've heard that they're concerned you might use the garage for living space. How's that again?!)

Leera, Paul, those walking onions look really interesting. We'd like to start some at the ranch. Do the deer eat them? Will the bear dig them up?

PaulNKS

CastIron,

I never thought about deer eating them. I have a lot of deer, and I know cows will eat onion, but I never have noticed the deer eating them.... Now I have an electric fence around my garden so, I guess they don't try anymore.

If the critters'll eat 'em, we're out of luck. Otherwise, we'll sure import some sets. Got a raised bed right over the septic system; they should do well there--good drainage.

CastIron,

You can put them anywhere, not just the garden. A buddy of mine has them in several different flower beds. He no longer keeps a garden but likes his walking onions.

Thanks everyone!! I appreciate all the good thoughts.

We've got a lot of work to do,but at least we will have a place to call our own. It's taken us 5 years to get here from where we started.
