Can little bars of soap, or pieces, be made into larger bars?

Although I've never made soap before I would assume that you could grate them and then melt them down and reform bars out of them? I do know that you can grind up your old little bars into a little water and make a hand soap like you'd put into a pump. Now you've piqued my interest, it will be interesting to hear how the gurus respond to your question.

I'm not sure exactly how it's done, but I know my Gramma used to collect pieces of soap or bars when they got too small and would melt them into bigger bars. Sorry I can't be much more help than that. One thing I would mention, is I would be careful about what scents you mix together, because as cool as it was she did this, sometimes it smelled... well you know.

As an alternative, this is what I do. From an old towel, I make terry cloth bags, with draw string top...insert the little pieces, pull the top closed. Now you have a washcloth, complete with facecloth. Use drawstring to hang to dry, over shower nozzle. ::)

use it to wash laundry
melt it in a double boiler with a bit of hot water and then pour it into molds and after a day or two pop them out and let it dry

might be able to find info about it under "french milling"? i'm new to soapmaking, but i'm sure i read about reforming scraps into molded bars and i think thats what it was called in one of the articles i read.

Can little bars of soap, or pieces, be made into larger bars?
This is what we do...it's very simple and works wonderfully!!
Take the little piece and "glue" it onto a brand new bar of soap. To do this wet both pieces (the little piece and the new bar). Place the little piece (piggy back) onto the new bar, and press together. After you use it a couple of times the two pieces will be solidly fused together. Hope this helps :)
I save all my soap pieces in a mason jar in my bathroom.
When I have enough pieces, to make a bar.
I take the jar and set it into a small cooking pot that is half full with water. I put a little water into the mason jar with the pieces of soap. It also helps weigh down the jar.
I then turn the stove top up to get the water to a rolling boil. Then basically wait and stir the stuff in the jar around with a wooded shiskabob stick.
Once its all pretty much liquid I pour off the mixture into a foil cupcake cup and let sit overnight.
If you change soap scents like I do you’ll come up with an interesting smelling soap. My most recent bar had the smell of sandalwood, coco, oatmeal and ….? Im not sure what else.
The only problem I had was that the soap doesn’t solidify up like a normal bar of soap. Its not as hard but it works!

I take a section from an old nylon and tie a knot in one end. Then I stuff it with soap pieces and knot the open end. After you get it wet you can kind of smash all the soap into a big lump.
