if you have never seen one of the plants, well, it is something. Mine are now starting to fall over, they must be about 8 feet tall. I am wondering, how do you know when the grain is ready to harvest? I don't want it to fall off.

Bookwormom,
I don't know much about amaranth, but I did find the information at the following link"
Farm Radio International - Grain Amaranth (http://www.farmradio.org/english/radio-scripts/48-6script_en.asp)
I hope that answers your question.

Harvest after the seeds 'plump-up'....just before the heads become dry and brittle.
What cultivar did you grow?
