Hey there everybody. Does or is there anyone that has lived in the Southeast area of Wyoming, say 25-75 miles from F.E. Warren? My husband and I are looking at retiring in the next 2-3 years and Wyoming, from what I have read, seems to have a pretty nice (low) tax situation all the way around, as well as a small population, and seemingly decent gun laws. I was just wondering if someone could tell me from first hand experience about the trials and tribulations (if any) of trying to grow vegetables there, what the winters are like and in your opinion where the nicest area to live is. Any and all opinions and experiences are appreciated. Thanks so much for your time. Have a great day

Hi Laverney! I know there is at least two members here that live in WY - haven't seen them around for awhile. One of them is in the Cheyenne area I know.

I travel there for business quite often - depending on where you settle - winters can be harsh and plan for it to be windy most all the time. Land in the area you are considering is certainly affordable although might be viewed as rather 'desolate' by some. Trees are generally at a minimum in SE Wyoming. Taxes are favoarable as well as guns laws. I truly think WY is the last hold out of the West so to say! Anyway I can only tell you IMO I would avoid anything on the I-80 stretch west of Cheyenne (except maybe the Laramie area). I do like the more northern stretches of WY (sheridan, buffalo, cody) as well as the Lander area. I would definitely recommend a couple of road trips if you can do so to assess areas you like. People are friendly and laid back. Make sure you bring your cowboy boots!

Good luck and let us know how things progress!

My wife and I visit Douglas, Wyoming nearly every year. We really enjoy it there. We have found the people to be very friendly. We love the climate in the summer; but we've never spent a winter there.

Rockymtngirl is right about making a couple of road trips to see what you like and dislike about the area. There are some fairly inexpensive tracts of land east of Wheatland (at least there were last summer).

You might find some information about the real estate in the local newspaper; the Douglas Budget. They have an online edition http://www.douglas-budget.com/.

Let us know what you find!

Having lived 15 years on and off in various parts of Wyoming, and 3 in Laramie, I would not recommend Laramie - coldest place on earth except antartica and the wind blows 30 miles an hour on a calm day.

Check out Sheridan, Buffalo - northern areas - longer growing season, more water, nicer mountains, etc. Mind you it gets cold there but at least in Sheridan you can grow tomatoes and in Laramie that is impossible unless you greenhouse them totally. It's too high in altitude for many things to grow. Way higher than Denver.
