It seems a hawk and maybe a couple of his friends friends have found my chickens. Last Friday, I was watching the chickens walk around the yard, enjoying the nice day, when a flash of white wings and a pair of claws came out of no where and attempted to catch one of my birds. They usually walk in a line, and he picked the last hen. I don't know if she ducked or just scrambled away just in time, but he was inches away from snagging Huggies. He swooped up for another try, but by this time the chickens had all run for the coop, sqwaking. I've never heard such a racket in my life! They all huddled in there, while the bird circled around. I looked up, and there were three of them, circling slowly, slowly, until they went up over the the trees and past the hill. My chickens stayed in there for a couple of hours, then carefully ventured outside. Now, again, I was indoors and I heard the same commotion, and I just know it was the same bird come around again.
Well, I know it's illegal to shoot birds of prey, but I can't keep my chickens cooped up, either. They need some space during the day. I am hoping that, since they are still young birds, they will learn to look out for hawks. Meanwhile, I have learned that chickens seem to have nine lives as well as cats!
