I've attempted to sign into the chat room for a couple months. The same error occurs:
I'll clock on the chat Room link. The Java Applets appears to load, the message I end up seeing is: Server error or unable to connect to the server.
Does anyone have suggestions?
I have re-downloaded Internet Explorer 8. It still isn't working

hmmm... have you tried accessing it with a different browser like Firefox? That may work.

I'm just taking wild guesses here. But, it may be your firewall. I know almost nothing about Vista if that is what you have. I would also check IE 8 security or privacy settings as something there may be blocking it as well.
It has been awhile since I've used Windows, but I can see the screen of options ... doggonit.... but can't remember how to get to them, to enable Java applets because it sounds like your settings are preventing the applet from loading.
I would do what was suggested and see if you can get it to load with Firefox.

Java is a separate program.
Be sure you have the latest version installed:

Contact Oliver, admin@backwoodshome.com
He knows of a couple other people having difficulty accessing the chat. I am one of them. Am posting right now from somewhere other than my home server. Chat will load, but I can't type or post anything or see any remarks others may be making. Separate problem from what I experience from my home using StarBand satellite broadband. Then, I get "Error: missing CR [fatal]" So far, after weeks of trying, no solution. Dial-up works OK, though. But the place I'm presently staying at on holiday, no go.
imho, a utility should work EVERY time for EVERY customer.

I'm with Boris. Good suggestions!
Now I don't know how Vista is setup; I'm using Windows XP Pro. On my machine, things to check would be, 'Menu Bar, Tools > Internet Options: (1) 'Security', (2) 'Programs > Manage Add-Ons', and, (3) 'Advanced' category and line items. Under, 'Advanced': DO NOT TOUCH THE RESET BUTTON!
Read what everything says under these headings and become familiar with the various defaults. Be sure to make notes of anything you might change so that you can return to undue anything that might not work out.
Now, at the extreme right of your GOOGLE menu bar, you'll find another, 'Tools' menu. Check the operation of your pop-up blocker here. Add BHM's address to the list of monitored exclusions in order to always allow its operation.
Note: 'Manage Add-Ons' is, also, available as an option under the Windows Menu's, 'Tools'. Antivirus settings might, also, have a role in this. I can't help you there.

If having Java freezes your email client.. any suggestions if someone wants to go to the chat room and Needs the Java there?
If having Java freezes your email client.. any suggestions if someone wants to go to the chat room and Needs the Java there?
Grizzy posted this on my behalf, so I think I should fill you in on the problem.
I have 2 email accounts and Yahoo is never a problem, but Hotmail has been clunky lately and it's frozen. I can see my emails, but not open them. There is an Java icon showing that there is an error on the page. I uninstalled Java and disabled the add ons but nothing changed. I abandoned the account and opened a Gmail account. No problems. Tried to enter the chat room, learned that I needed Java, so installed the update, and Gmail was affected (but not Yahoo), so I uninstalled the program and disabled the add ons again.
Hotmail continues to be frozen, still has the icon and the error on the page message even though there is no program and no add ons. Gmail appears to be sensitive, Yahoo is oblivious and keeps on truckin'.....
I have Windows XP with Avast anti virus.

I would check your anti-virus settings and firewall settings. Java shouldn't affect your email... any of them. I have several email accounts.. two are gmail and then several with my own websites. Java has never caused a problem there.
I would make certain that your settings in antivirus, firewall, and IE options are not blocking Java. Also make sure that you have the latest version installed.

Also on your browser.. at the Top..
go to TOOLS
go to INTERNET OPTIONS
go to ADVANCED
Scroll down until you see JAVA and see if it's checked. It should be. I believe you'll need to restart your pooter if you are just now checking the JAVA box.

I would just like to respectfully submit that a truly workable chat should be easily accessible to all, not just those who happen to have the right combination of software/hardware. A number of us have mentioned that we would like to join chat but cannot. Just because some--even many--can get in without trouble does not address our dilemma. I, for one, feel like an outsider because of this issue. I didn't create it, and I can't fix it. Just my two cents' worth.

Hey CIC :)
You know.. before the story started up on the written chat.. I sure enjoyed talking to yas there. A few threads down (here on the chat forum) is the "Ole Shade Tree" I started coz we lost that conversation time to the story in the other written chat thread. If ya want to go back to the written chat I jus bet others will follow too. On the General Forum, there is a "rave" thread and folks are having a nice time telling whas going right in their world.. and are enjoying themselves.
Times are so wierd now and it really is nice to share what we feel good about and what is a challenge and sometimes jus to share a good cuppa coffee and shoot the breeze. Thas what the chat room is too, only a lil faster. Maybe things will improve and you'll get into a chat room here. In the meantime.. I'll meet yas unner the Ole Shade Tree an have some basil lemonade chilled and waiting :yes4: ...

With my old computer at first I could not get in I had ie 6 or 7 can't remember. I got portable firefox & was able to get in. That was some time ago with the old forum. Now with the new computer I just tried it the other day & went in without having to do anything. I wish I could help you fix the problem. sissy
