My taters and beans might be frozen fair by next evening. Might get down to the low 30's, that's just not right. My maters will not hit the ground till may 5 at best. I also have out 6 rows of corn, beans and squash. Its not up yet and i,am glad its not. Done sprayed my beans twice already they made it now this one, we will see. Update for this morning on wed. 28 NO FROST dodged one there. Only got down to 35 border line for sure. Medium fog this morning. Can't wait till after 5th next month, that's when i,ll feel safe enough to put out maters and watermelons, more corn & beans and the rest of it.

Are you all ready to bet on your horse in the Kentucky derby tomorrow? :sarcastic: Heck I dont even know the names of the horses that are running much less bet on any of em. Wonder if they will run in the rain? The forecast says storms tomorrow, so we shall see. Maybe a mint julep is in order even if I dont know squat about horses. lol

I hope no one got the frost this past week. It missed us here and I am sure thankful it did. The fruit trees are loaded with fruit this year. Next week the rest of the garden goes in the ground.

Have a great day!

I got my taters planted. as soon as this flooding stops I'll replant them. It has been pouring down steady since Friday night and the water is up to the bridge and the low lying houses in town are flooded. The french drains we made around the barn and sheds can not handle it all, water is running in one end and out the other. WE never had a drop of water in the house in 15 years, but we setup the shop vac as it is running in heavily in the dining area, right under the window. I would like to dig down outside and see what is going on. hope you all are staying dry

We have had rain all weekend here. I am sure there are some creeks around that are out of their banks. But we are all dry here.
Rosie I am so sorry to hear about the leak in the cozy lil house. Sometimes the best of our plans go amiss. So far our gardens are doing ok. Everything is growing and looking really good here. When the ground drys after this rain we are going to finish planting all the things that get direct seeded like beans and such and then transplant the plants from the greenhouse to the garden. That will likely take a whole day to do.
Stay safe and dry.

Have a great day!

HOW ON EARTH DID I MISS A KY THREAD!!!!

Todd County checking in...at least, that part that isn't underwater. Picked up 3 ducklings when the TSC was selling out their chicks, and the little devils are delighted with the weather. At least they're having fun...the rest of us are just happy to see the sun shine (the cat and the chickens were starting to look seriously depressed). And the creeks starting to return to their normal size. Hope the wild turkey nesting in the rivercanes down at the end of the neighbors pasture was above water level--I was looking forward to seeing her bring the poults through the yard to the woods. At least I know the doe living by the creek had her fawn at least 2 weeks ago, so it was plenty big enough to follow her to safety (when the dog and I spooked her 2 weeks ago, she trotted away slowly, tail wagging, looking over her shoulder to see if we were watching/following...but none of those tremendous, ground-covering leaps they're famous for. Never saw the fawn, but I know it was there somewhere close.).

Put on clogs and a rain coat and went out yesterday. The dry creekbed south of the pasture was a raging creek.
In the meantime during the worst of downpours, the water getting into the house simply stopped. By evening the spot was not even damp anymore and we took the shop vac back where it belongs. Heaven knows what that is all about. but I am thankful.
Brownie had a calf shortly after Stella left and it started to rain. . It's a girl and I call her Molly. cute as a button. I just cleaned out the insides of the wood stove since the great outdoors is waterlogged , can't do anything outside. that stove has more nooks and crannies inside, especially around the bake oven and I am looking like I have come out of an ash hopper. Glad that is out of the way. the walls need painting next. I hope your turkey's nest was safe Kitty. I would not worry about the deer. those little ones can run pretty soon and follow momma.

Whewww the storm missed us. And I am not complaining. We got a few drops of rain last night and it is cool and kinda breezy today. And somewhere along the way someone mentioned the potential for frost tonight. Guess that means we fill the water tank and get ready to spray the garden before the sun comes up tomorrow just in case. Maybe I will wait till Monday to transplant my peppers to the garden. It should be a really nice day tomorrow for a cookout, sunny but not too hot.

Yep one more night we are at risk for a frost. We didnt get any last night and it was cold here. The river really does help keep us a little warmer here than most places. I have had a sweatshirt on most of the day today while outside at our cookout. That just aint right for this time of year. Hope everyone has had better luck getting taters to come up than we have. Our I think rotted in the ground. But we have a good crop of volunteers that came up from last year so we jus plowed rows of those an left em to grow. They are about a foot tall and look good.

Sshhh Green jeans, everybody will want to come here.
well, it is cool this morning and a perfect day to work outside and not sweat too much. got the strawberries picked and want to make some jam. have to take some soda, ate too many strawberries. Sam put some baby turkeys under a setting hen whose turkey eggs were not fertile. she is a good mommie. He tried it last night , after dark, with two other hens, and one killed the little turkey that did not stay put under the wing but had to crawl out and holler for help. Sam tried putting it under several times. have to go check on the other, they are under the hen fine, but the moment they stick a head out from under her wing she pecks them. I feel like putting my turkey hen down in the lower pasture where a wild Tom is singing love songs and calling our useless Tom names. The other hen he killed by dancing around on her back all the time. Really. I have no experience with rasing turkeys from scratch, figured they would act like roosters and hens. He is an old fashioned variety and we figured he could handle the situation. Fooled us.
you all take care and keep warm. I just may build a fire

Rosie the turkey eggs I put in the incubator were not fertile either when I candled them. I have read that the large breed of turkeys have problems mating and will some times kill the smaller hen in the process. I had thought about ordering some turkey poults but decided against it when I saw the price of near $10 each. Am thinkin maybe a flea market somewhere to get a start of em. The Arucanas did hatch really well, I got nine babies out of 12 eggs, good hatch rate. And I just set 40 more dark cornish eggs today. Couldnt do anything else for all the mud. Need to weed beds, but dont relish the idea of being mired in mud to my knees. lol

Be careful when ya buy at fleamarket's, try and deal with someone that's been around a while there. A friend of mine bought some chicken's, looked fine with in a week all of them were dead even his. Wiped out his egg production he sold some fine egg's. Took him a dollar or two getting back on line with it. The local vet told him that he thought someone had brought chicken's in from outa state, a lot of people lost bird,s. Could happen to anyone just a thought. I,am sure you are already careful about that, he didnot isloate the new bird,s first because they looked fine. He learned the hard way i eat two of his egg's thismorning. Not preaching but a lot of people don't isloate new stock before intregrating them, it cost him big time. Good luck and post some pic's of the yard stock. I love farm picture's and hope to get everything set up here before winter this year. Clearing the rest of the bottom and putting in a coup and hopefuly a goat or two. Turkey's will be included.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts MrGreenJeans, the lack of an extra building or pen right now is what is keeping me from getting live turkeys. I would rather just get eggs and hatch those, but they are kinda hard to come by too. Bookwormom gave me some turkey eggs when I was there in April but none of them were fertile. Oh well, we can always try again.

Sense i came back 15 years ago, i keep it looking good year round, no one does that any more. Very disappointed with the way our tradition's are sliding away anymore. People are just so lazy these day's, can't understand someone wanting to lay around all the time doing nothing. welll, that makes twice that my taters got washed out this year. with our sandy soil we can get in the garden relatively soon after rain. I sharpened my hoe and went after all the knotweed and grass that is trying to take over. I hope It won't hurt them, but I just had to transplant my waslking onions into a more permanent bed, they were too close to the horseradish. Everything spreads, more than we think when we plant something. Got herbs drying in the attic, peppermint, lemon balm and oregano. Then a visitor came, and then a young amish couple came to look at the herb garden. so I never got back to cutting more herbs. Yesterday I baked bread and put a loaf on the table for breakfast on the deck. when I looked again it was gone. One of the dogs. darn, you have to watch, Once they took off with a whole pizza.

I will lose the whole upper garden. Putting in a modular home and the septic won't let it stand, to close. I hate to pull corn&beans dig 3 30' row's of new taters, well stock market time, make something outa the tater loss. I hope anyway. I will under sell by at least 30% they will move very fast, better than throwing them away they will be a crap load of them. Might whole sale early at the market, i have before when i've had to. If a person get's bit they will know it. I have heard about the blacksnake thing to, all i can say is that a dozer man on a strip job one winter moved a huge rock and it was full of rattler's, copperhead's, blacksnake's, some he had not seen before, it was just a huge den. Just got back from a berry trip, 3 gal. today not much time, about a gal. an hour not to good but better than nothing i reckon. Seen a big rat snake took pics, as soon as my tec, my daughter is abel i,ll get her to post them. ;D She had major surgery last week but doing good now, they will not take the stapels out till mon. She wants to go back to work thursday next week. Hot here it's 93 in the shade better than the other day. Don't seem to be as humid today. Everything needs water in the garden that's for sure. Seen more snakes this year than in several years, y'all be careful. The turning snakes loose thing go's around every year, they do not turn snakes, yotes, ladybugs, or elephants loose in the state of Kentucky. I keep up with the restocking program's and none of those thing's are on the list. You do not get fined for killing a snake unless it's in a state or federal park. Only there are they protected as everything else is in them, even the flower's. Those stories go around every year and they drive me nut's. Folk's orta know better. Just made it back with 2 more gal. of red resberries they are about gone now. Still maybe another 5 day's and 2-4 more gal. Still 93 in the shade here, hope it's cooler where ya at.

Well its a nice cool 76 degrees here today. :yes4: Ok I lied, Im in the house. I am a wimp all of a sudden. Dang I cant take the heat, it makes me ill and feel like crap for the rest of the day.
We have been going out and picking wild blackberries in the late evening here when it is a lil bit cooler. We have picked about 10 gallon so far this year. The garden stuff is starting to come on and I will need to get in on that whether its hot or not. I so far havent seen any snakes while picking berries. Just the small one about 2 ft long that I killed a few weeks ago by the back steps and not even sure what it was.

Here in Kentucky we have a big problem with crows destroying corn when it is almost ripe. We took some sections of deer fence netting and put over the tops of the corn all the way around the patch, jus the rows around the perimeter, an this seems to deter the crows. I guess they think it is a trap. Just FYI if ya have a crow problem.

Have a great day!

10 gallons, you are lucky with the black berries Stella. Up near the cemetary is a good size patch, but with this drought the berries are not worth picking.Tiny is the word. I wear an old cotton square diaper on my head when I work outside in the heat. I wet it down first and it makes a huge difference. DH just got me a fan to put in the summer kitchen, so much nicer to have a breeze going. It has been pretty miserable the last few weeks. DS was here from Denver and it was in the upper 90s every day.

The best way to keep crows out of the corn is to hang a dead crow in the corn field. If you don't have one a black rag hanging on top of a tall stick will work. Make it about the same size as a dead crow would be.

We must not be living right in KY. our northern counties got it this morning. At least no death's so far, our state is beautiful with the mountains but even in the low land's flooding can be bad. This seems like a spring time event. I don't like any storm's but i think the flash flooding is the worst of the bunch. I hope the weather will give us a break, West Va. got it to along with some of southern Ohio. I,am gona pick up some water and bleach today and drop it off, might not be much but it's what i can do. That's two things i know folk's need as i have been in their shoes before.

I can now really appreciate the AC in my summer kitchen during the day when I have to be out there canning. The garden is doing really good even tho the heat is hard for me. So for this I am thankful.

This was on the porch in the shade too and at about 11 am. I know it was hotter this after noon. Finally this evening we got a lil shower of rain so I am sure tomorrow wont be any better. The rain does help the gardens tho.
Have any others noticed some leaves falling? Poplar trees usually start losing leaves early around here. It is starting to look like the end of summer with some dry leaves, the grass making seed heads and lots of the annual weeds starting to die back.

You can tell that fall is fast approaching our area. The trees look pale, the grass is trying to make seed heads on very short stems, the field corn is turning brown. The last of the garden crops are ripening and are smaller in size. The pumpkin and cushaw vines are dying back. The air is so wonderfully cool in the evenings. Gosh this year has almost left us. So far this fall has been really busy here with deer hunting season and several deer in the NEW freezer. Yeah we had to buy another one to hold all the meat and I still have 30 chickens to butcher this weekend. Not to mention a hog to butcher sometime in December and still another round of hunting in december as well. So we are set for meat this year and I am so glad. THe weather has been so nice. although we had rain today and was pretty cool. But its posed to be high in the upper 30's this weekend as I try to butcher chickens. Wouldnt ya know it.
I spent a week in western Kentucky cooking helping my aunt cook for deer hunters at her hunting lodge last week. Gosh what a job cooking for 35 hungry hunters. And that was just 1 meal per day but to make the amount needed it would take nearly all day. I am really glad to be home for a while.
We are having a Thanksgiving dinner with hubbys family tomorrow and our dinner will be here on Sunday when our other extended family members can get here. Youngest son and his girlfriend are home for the holiday from Nevada and we are so glad they can be here. But it will make for a depressing Christmas with them so far away from home. did I tell you I took a course to learn to shoot and get a licence to carry a weapon in my purse? My mother in law would be proud of me. I havnot seen any deer around here for a long time. I thought that my dogs would think they belong to the farm and are part of their charges and protect them, but maybe they chase them off. More than likely. To go hunting here you would have to lock up everything. we can not make a step on this place without dogs, goats and a really stinky billy goat coming along. Neighbour down the road got rid of her goats, I noticed that I saw a big white dog up with the critters, then when I got down to the barn, there were two more. Scratching head. It seems the neighbour's dog is out of work and he has taken to come up here and sit with my critters. He has taken to barking at strangers coming here, too. Poor fellow, has a couple miles to walk to get to work and he is hobbling. Chased a car. We need another dog like we need a nail in the head, but with it raining so heavy, DH has been putting out food for him and he slept in the barn last night. Skinny as can be, poor fellow. I think neighbour would be glad to get rid of him. He is a nice dog. I have not seen a single snowflake. It has been nice and warm. I got comfrey and horseradish dug.

the snow was nice while it lasted. I wish we would get a foot or so, then they can clear the roads and the sun can shine, but stay cold so the snow lasts a month or so. Everybody could drive where they have to and the snow is so much prettier than this constant snow, rain, mud, snow, rain mud scenario. I am waiting for my favorite seed catalog. In the meantime, I really need to clear out a bunch of stuff, we just have way too much and nobody needs any of it. One reason I do not do Christmas presents, it just adds to the clutter. I can prove it. My sister in law felt sorry for me because I get nothing for christmas, so she brought me a gift wrapped box, not to be opened til Christmas. Nice of her, really is, but I do not need a little sculpture of a giraffe, it is all in my way and she will have her feelings hurt if I don ot display the stuff prominently. It all is a pain in the kazoo. I like sensible gifts, like five pounds of homeground cornmeal, a sack of sweet taters, a bean picking basket. I think to reciprocate for the gifts, I will give her several packs of TP. Nicely wrapped. Excuse the rant, you all have a blessed next year. May our gardens do better than ever, the chickens lay, and all the lambs and kids be twins and healthy.

With all the snow and ice you'd think I could have a day off work. I guess I am lucky to have a steady job. I don't mean to sound ungrateful but my house could stand a good cleaning not to mention getting rid of a lot of excess stuff.I got my first seed Catalogs this week. They always make me long for Spring. Looking forward to a break in the weather.

Wheeewww! I was thinkin it was never gonna end, the ugly weather that is. Rosie you can have my share of the snow, I have only been off the farm 1 time in 4 weeks now. But that I really dont mind at all, its just that I cant get out side and do a whole lot.
We live on a gravel county road and they do not scrape the snow off it. The guys have been goin in and out to work but tomorrow they are going out the other way. The road that is shortest to town is ice covered and even in 4 wheel drives there is one hill that is really dangerous. With the lil melting that it has done only made the ice slicker. So when these two are bluffed, I know its slick. So my truck will be in the drive till prolly spring. :yes4:

Have a great day!

Well, you should be rolling Stella. I've been spreading manure today, just took in the laundry. Warm and windy. not a speck of ice left on the pond. looks like winter is over and spring has come. But we know this won't last.

Hey fellow Kentuckians, winter is back with us again. We had a nice weekend here, nice enough to get outside then on monday night the snow started again. Groundhog, you're fired! Making us get our hopes up for some nice weather. I am ready to plant stuff and play in the dirt outside. I do have my onion seeds started and they are doin nicely. Got some other stuff I need to start but a lil too blustery to get out in it today, at least for me. Maybe tomorrow. :yes4:
Hope all is well with everyone and you are warm an well fed.

Have a great day!

We crawled home the last 15 miles today, had to take DS to the airport in Louisville, snow started in Sonora and got heavier, but we made it up the steep hill we were worried about. It sure looked nice, though, winter wonderland. and it is nice to come home to a warm house, and I put on a pot of mulled juice. It is just a matter of time now, you are gonna plant peas on Valentine's day Stella, right?

Rosie I would sure plant them if we can get the tiller in there to plow the place and get it prepped. Not sure if that will happen or not. Probably too wet. But the first time we have several days of dry and the ground is workable they will get planted. For some reason the past several years we never manage to get the pea patch ready in fall so it can be planted early. But one year, at least one more year before I die I will get the guys here to get all the ducks in a row and prep the ground in fall like we use to. Then you can literally plant them in wet muddy snow covered ground and those are the ones that have done best for us. But right now we still have some snow laying on the ground and its cold. Supposed to warm this weekend to around 50. I am so ready for spring.
Hope all is well with everyone out that way.

Have a great day!

It is spring here, sometimes the weather is nice and sometimes not so much. I hope everyone is busy getting started in the gardens. We have got a few things planted so far, hard to catch weather nice enough to get the ground dry enough to plow. Things look great in the greenhouse so far, it is full to the gills. Looks like we are gonna be a lil late getting the major part of the garden stuff planted due to weather.
Hope everyone got thru the last round of storms that came thru this evening. We had some wind down here on the river, nothing major, but others in our county had power outages. All we got was lots of rain. And supposed to get more wind and rain till midnight.

Have a great day!

Where are all my fellow Kentuckians? Hope everyone is just busy as lil bees planting gardens and playin in the dirt, er mud. Progress is slow getting gardens planted with all the rain we have had but ours is in and looks pretty good so far. Got some places that would sure make good rice paddies here. But am thankful for what we do have so far. Most folks in our area still have not even been able to work their ground much less plant anything.
Hope everyone is well and still hoping for a good season and good crops.

Have a great day!

Hello from Central Kentucky. I figure the rain will lead to a hot summer of burn bans and dry weather. We've just finished getting the stone laid on our driveway, and we now can get up and down on the property. I met the other day with the building inspector for our county (playing by the rules, lol), and plan to erect a small barn with a loft. I am thinking of trying to post pictures here as we develop the property, yet at this time I don't even know how to size photos to post. I'll study the process, in time. As we pay cash as we go, without debt, finances are always budgeted/limited. Progress is being made. When camping at our property, in the evening it is so nice, with the sounds of tree frogs, owls, and the occasional coyote to be heard. Last year was the first that i canned vegetables from our garden! I am planning to delve into pickling this year. I'm hopeful that everyone your way is well. Take care.

Hello out there to all my fellow Kentuckians. Where has everyone gotten off too? I am sure everyone had a busy summer and hopefully had a good garden and all that stuff. But its winter when most of us have a lil bit more free time. Or maybe its just me with too much free time on my hands. But raise ya hand if ya still here.

Have a great day!
