Hello fellow Kentuckians. It is way too cold and nasty to be outside, so ya need to be inside and warm and toasty and catchin up on the happenins online.
Our weather here stinks, rained cats and dogs yesterday and last night, minor flooding in some areas, now it is freezing and we have a light snow. I am in the eastern area, applachia, where we have our own set of laws.lol ;D And seems this year to have our own weather pattern.

Have a great day!

Hey sbemt456. I'm on the other end of the state. It was snowing 2 days ago, near 60 yesterday, and raining and cold today. Gotta love KY weather or you won't make it here LOL

For a bit there I was beginning to think I was all by my lonesome. Are you by any chance near Ky Lake area? I have an aunt on the western side of the lake that I visit about every other month. Nice out there, just like the mountains in the east better.

Did you all catch that on the news? A statewide smoking ban? What the heck, I cant smoke in my own darn house now.

stella

gwhilikerz
01-14-2009, 02:23 PM
I think they mean for public places. They will tax you more to smoke at home. Although i don't smoke (haven't since the 70's) I do think the owner of a business should decide whether he allows smoking. It would then be up to the customer whether he goes there.
Stay warm the next couple of days. They are predicting 4 tonight and 0 for Friday morning. Coldest spell in 4 years.

sbemt456

Staying warm here in the mountains.
I think the smoking ban is more about money than peoples health. The person who proposed the ban (David Williams) was told by his coherts that "we dont gain revenue from a ban but would a tax". Just my opinion. We are in a very small town and you could really tell when we got the city ban, the restuarants were all but empty. We only have 2 left and one is a Dairy Queen.
Ah well, me and my house will do as we please at our house.

Have a great day.

Another Kentuckian chiming in (and freezing my butt off). I'm in the eastern part of the state, too - about 50 miles east of Lexington (but formerly of Pike county)

The one thing I really like about KY is that we can still smoke just about everywhere, even in some grocery stores. (I even felt that way when I quit smoking for a couple of months) I'd rather pay more than lose more freedoms. OR I might just grow my own.

bookwormom
01-15-2009, 06:37 PM
you all know tobacco grows good here in Ky. If I were a smoker I would grow my own. My husband's aunt Rachel always smoked a pipe. I guess it used to be common.
yeah, it sure is chilly. But that is the nice thing about Ky, we have four seasons, but winter does not drag on and on. I guess we can stand it for a few weeks.

what do you really like about KY?

sbemt456
01-15-2009, 07:09 PM
Hi bookwormom, was wandering where ya had got off to. Well I dont have to be out in the world till next wednesday, dentist appointment in Lexington, till then I'm stayin in the house.
Junie we cant be far apart as I am about 80 mile east of Lexington. I did paramedic ride time in Johnson county and was in Pikeville 1 time in the 4 months I was riding. Nice place.
Did you ever try smoking that home grown tobacco? We raised tobacco when I was young and as kid will, I had to try it. Still dont like that shade of green. I remember being too sick to die. Unfortunately I do still smoke and am soon going to make a real effort to quit. Enough taxes already.

Have agreat day and stay warm!

Stella, did you cure the tobacco before you smoked it? Ya gotta cure it. I guess I could quit smoking, but I'm too stubborn to. I like smoking!

As for Pikeville, my mother always told me, if you can't say something nice, don't say anything. I like where I'm living now, though.

thanks stella, I had to go home, stayed for a few weeks, dad is not connected to Internet. it looked like my mom was on her deathbed.

I would like to grow a few tobacco plants to make a spraying tonic for the garden, it kills aphids, wonder what it would do for cabbage loopers?

My heart is in the East. I loved it there immediately I set foot on the creek as a new bride and still do. You guys familiar with Breathitt county?

sbemt456
01-16-2009, 07:01 AM
Bookwormom hope your family is better. Breathittt is a lot like Lee county, lots of remote areas and the older folks seem a little set in their ways. ;) They dont like these new fangled gadgets. Made many many ambulance runs to KRMC in my EMS career. Just good mountain folks.

Junie I had my trial with backey when we were stripping so it was cured. Still I turned green.

I have a book that I bought last summer, Old Time Gardening Wisdom by Jerry Baker and he talks of his Grandma Put making a tonic with tobacco and in context of the book I got the impression she was using like Red man in the pouch. As for the cabbage worms we had last year, I used wood ashes. Worked like a charm till I ran out of ashes. I will have more ashes this year. And I am a firm believer in the results of manure tea.
It is still cold here at 11AM at 4 degrees and I need to get more firewood from the porch.

Stay warm.

Just to chime in; Yes we do have four seasons in KY. Today is winter. Tomorrow will be Spring. The next day? Who knows?

okay, I'll start saving my woodashes.

you are so right Gwhilikerz.

I have been to Beattyville, husband's Dad's wife was in the old folks home there. The area around slade is just so wonderful. we thought we would have time to go to Red river gorge to go hiking, at least for a week in fall, but when you have animals you are tied down worse than with little kids. I wish we had a bunch of like minded folks around close and we could take turns babysitting each other's places so we could get away on occasion.
MIL actually lives equal distances from Jackson and Hazard, six miles up a creek, talk about out in the sticks.
I love the old mountain people, did from the first. I am sure you know old women who have a quilting frame hanging from the ceiling and you pull a rope and it moves up and out of the way. Last time I stopped by an old neighbor she showed me her cedar chest full of quilts she made and we talked about gardens.

sbemt456
01-16-2009, 06:04 PM
My dad was in the nursing home here before he passed on in 2004. He was well cared for, I worked EMS at the time and they knew me so that was a plus. My life has never been the same, guess he was the anchor.

As for the Gorge, even the private lands here are the same as far as terrain and beauty. The only difference is private land owners dont allow foreigners to hike around on their property.lol Hubby and I were talking about the people in Eastern Ky last night with the extreme cold. Hubby was a part time deputy here for a while and he said he had been in houses where the folks were obviously very poor, but would offer you something to drink or eat when you went to their house on a patrol call, very warm and hospitable folks. And I am certain there are ones that have a hard time keeping food on the table and heat right now. What irks me is ones that do have money think they are so much better than the poor people and wont give you the time of day much less offer you something to drink. Every one expects some government entity to take care of the needy, the churches do nothing, just build more nicer empty pews. Such a waste.
I went in the ambulance when I was working to pick up a little lady that had fallen. I commented on the big weaving loom that was sitting on her porch, and she said " when I get well you come on out here and we will weave and you can learn how". But she passed on and I never got the chance. She lived in a neighboring county and was my high school best friends grandmother. Later found out that the loom was thrown in the junk. So sad.

Ok I'm done now!
Stay safe and warm.

And be darned he is farther east than I am. Welcome Mr. Greenjeans. What the heck ya doin campin a time like this? Ya know y'll ketch ya death out there!

Not too bad cold here today, in the 30's. Went out long enough to take the ashes out of the fireplace and put them in my can for puttin on cabbage this summer. ;)

We made homemade pizza for supper tonight, homemade crust, homemade pepperoni, homemade sauce, I also put sausage and bacon on mine with bell peppers and onions from the freezer. Cheese is the only thing store bought, so not bad. Even the herbs home grown. It was pretty darn good.

BTW does any body still like Hee Haw? I remember as a little girl listening to grand ole opry on the radio on saturday nights. As to go back there again.

Wonder if it would be safe to have a county map of Kentucky so each of us could put a dot where we are? It would be cool.

Gwhilikerz we catch Hee Haw on RFDTV also. Actually that is what I was watching when I posted. To me TV is for entertainment and if I have to think hard to follow the plot to a movie, to heck with it. Just stuff to make me laugh is all I want to watch.. Hubby calls it mindless stuff.

BTW are you all gettin snowed on? Earlier we were getting freezing rain, now just snow.

sbemt456
01-22-2009, 05:08 PM
Bookwormom I think some of them may not check in as often as some of us and havent noticed the new state/country talk section.
I have always told my boys that they could only go as far as I could drive in 2 hours in and emergency. ;) Dont fret, I could get to ya in 2 hours in an emergency. As long as I didnt get arrested for speeding.

Most of our snow melted today , so I got to go out on the deck. Supposed to be warm again tomorrow so maybe I can get out in the yard and walk around without falling again. Still got bruises from the last one.
We were in Lexington yesterday and went to Sam's club. We passed the meat counter and could not believe how much the price of meat has dropped. Last summer hubby paid around 7.00 a pound for whole ribeye steak, yesterday they were 4.94 a pound. And other meat has dropped also. I was kinda shocked. We dont need meat at this time because we have chicken and venison in the freezer. The one thing I did notice was the price of cooking oil, oucheeee! It has doubled since back in the summer when I bought it last. I only by olive oil and corn oil, no canola or wesson for me(made from GM grain), no crisco, it wont melt at body temp and that concerns me in the mornings. >:( Just wondered if any one else in Ky had noticed any major price changes.

Have a great day!

I really don't like the snow, but as any farmer in the know will tell you some snow is good for the soil as it helps to add some nitrogen, and with that info and enough money you can get a cup a coffee. As for where I am in ky I am in the western end of Hardin county, wishing I was farther east in the state as that is where I am originally from. (Jackstown)

01-25-2009, 05:12 PM
howdy phrr, we are practically neighbors, we are in the middle of Hart county, just a bit off 31 W.

I noticed the price of juice at the salvage store has gone up a lot too. I have not looked at meat prices in a long time. Brown rice at the Amish store went up from 1.49 a bag to 2.69.
We are supposed to get five inches of snow and I hope we do and it stays a few days. I know it is selfish, but I have invited folks from church already to come over and bring kids, sleds, innertubes, what have you. We have the perfect hill and we'll have a bon fire, then drink hot chocolate. Kentucky kids don't get to play much in the snow.

I am so impressed Moose too, I just don't know how to do stuff like that.
May I ask where in south Central KY?

sbemt456
01-26-2009, 07:58 PM
Bookwormom do ya think they are going to be able to use sleds or will they need ice skates? The snow I can tolerate but dang I dont like the ice. Although we need the water in the ground, we are still hauling water here, usually by now we have plenty.

I noticed on the news the other day that California areas some farmers were not able to plant some crops due to water restrictions. And the banks wont loan them operating funds till they can guarantee that they have a water source. It may be another dry year with another increase in some foods.
I suppose that if we get nasty weather I will be grounded to the house again. :-/ Dont need to fall down and go boom again.

Our place is a mess, trees down, fences down, not a trail open, citywater is having some problem, contamination, pumps out, I don't know, but the whole county is out of water. We have water stored and are doing fine. a cow had a calf and lost it, then she failed to clean herself. true friends cut their way in with a chainsaw and gave her a shot. it will be a while until we get power, we are the last ones on the last, b ack in the woods on the wrong side of the railroad tracks.

husband just turned on the generator, to pump water and then to run the freezer,so this is a fringe benefit.
all around, folks have got power back. I have to call in the morning, they may have forgotten about us. A friend told us he had the police and national guard stop by three times asking if they needed water or assistance of any kind, after the power was back on. Looks like the crews were sent first to the board members and a neighbor wrote a letter and told them she was going to let the governor know how they took care of things. It is the squeaky wheel that gets the grease.
Our daughter is coming for a visit tuesday. Husband got me a lady's size chainsaw yesterday, I need it too. It only weighs 6 pounds. He used it today to cut up all the branches in the yard. I guess I have to get out the galvanized tub so we can take a bath in front of the kitchen stove.
Hope everyone is safe and sound.

well, the hills around our place look just awful. there is not a single tree that is not damaged greatly. it sounded like war while it lasted, the break of limbs and trees sounds a bit like gunshots, then the sound of the crashing. It went on all night and all day. Our peripheral fence seems to have a big limb on it every ten feet. all the trails we made need to b e cleared again. It is such a mess, at least here out in the woods. I don't know how it is in town, have not been off the place. I am taking pictures of all the piled up branches we have down in the lower pasture. we hired the boys of our Amish friend to come with chainsaws as we are physically not able to cut the big stuff. so much work it is discouraging. what we need is the power company to come by with their big chipper/shredder, that would be a real help.
My neighbor Judy lost all her mature appletrees, and the big walnut tree in her yard. two drought summers, now an icestorm like nobody remembers. things need to ease up a bit. thanks for the concern snake.
Otherwise we are doing okay. I understand there are still lots of households without power and last night it got down to zero. for us it was a blessing in disguise as our pond was criss crossed with downed trees and the ice held, would have been impossible to clear with the water open.

I would have posted more last night, but we lost our power AGAIN! This time it was a substation that broke down. They got it fixed just as I was going to bed, so all is well today.

Pike county may not have fared so well, though. My BIL called last night and said that 6 out of 8 substations were down there. I haven't heard from him yet today.

The storms yesterday blew down more trees and caused some flooding, washing out part of our road.

Let's see, in the past 2 weeks, we've had an ice storm, a snow storm, high winds, and flooding. I reckon an earthquake will be next. ::)

I hope everyone has come through unscathed. we learned a few things to be sure.

The power is back on ( tho I find myself flipping the light switch from time to time just to make sure). My daughter just came home from Ecuador. The weather has moderated and i feel much better. I even found time to laugh at myself as I chased three 55 gal. barrels of aluminum cans across the back yard in the wind storm. MY back is sore from bending over picking up cans. ROFL

Well just when we thought it was spring, here comes winter again. Ice storm one week, spring like temps one week, and now we are to get snow this week.
Has anyone else noticed trees starting to bud out? Flowers and herbs starting to come back? I have herbs and flowers coming through the mulch and while cutting some trees over the weekend I noticed the trees had little leaf buds on them.Guess it is the extreme swings in temperature that triggered this process.

Hope all is well with everyone, and if we wait around the good old Kentucky weather will change again.

Have a great day.

there is a Kentucky Arts and Crafts show in Louisville the 21stand 22d. I guess everything is made in KY. I really would like to go check it out. There was an article in the paper, it is sponsored by the state, but no address. I hope that can be found. Anyone else going?

Bookwormom address listed on web site this year is as follows
KEC South Wing B
21 4th street
louisville, Ky.
Adults $8.00 children 15 and under free.
They are listing over 300 Exhibitors.

I have gone many times in the past and it is always a nice showing of the arts and crafts. I tryed finding my flyer they sent me but no luck. Anyway if you make it let us know how you liked it. I never have gone where they have it addressed as being on the web this year. All the times I went in the past it was at the Kentucky State Fairgrounds but I haven't been in the last 5,6 years or so. Well is it ever gonna be spring here in the Bluegrass state? It is March and the weather varies more than normal from day to day. I would like a few days of warm weather so my peas can sprout and maybe come up. It is almost time to start seeds for planting a little later. When its cold out doors I just cant get motivated to do much in the yard and garden. Does any one else feel like this? Or have I been in hibernation too long.

Got all the limbs cut up from ice storm played in the garage a few hours and went up to the campsite in Indiana to check on the place. racked a bunch of leaves and cut up limbs for the fire pit. Just wonder when the next snow will fall. got the raised bed ready for planting. come on spring.

I can not believe this snow. I have been at Ft Campbell a few years and live on post. I finally have a yard I can plant things in so I am starting a garden. *I have a fence to keep deer out but we have lots of racoons. Any advice to keep them away? I would love to chat with someone here to get a local nursery or somewhere to get good soil for my raised beds. I called one and they want 59.00 for one cubic yard of ammended soil, I need two so I am looking at 118.00 plus tax plus hauling it to my house, will take 2-3 trips. I am only here until September. So that is a large investment for one summer garden. I have a small scale salsa garden planned along with pickling cucumbers, watermelon and pumpkins. Anything I should know about the area bugs or critters that will help me? *Anyhow, soil is what I need, where can I get good soil at a reasonable price in the area?

I wouldn't waste money on ammended soil just to leave it behind... I'd buy a couple bags of composted cow manure and put a little under each plant, then use "miracle grow" to feed the "plants" not the weeds... That means watering the plants not the whole garden. For a garden spot your going to leave behind, i believe that would be the best option.

Best thing for coons, is a live trap and a 22...

I need 2 cubic fee to fill the bed, it is 24.00 for a cubic foot. I could go with 1.5 cubic feet topsoil and put some manure as you said under the areas where I am planting? That would save me about half I can live with 50-60 dollars. Thank you

sounds like you all are done with the cleaning up chores from the ice storm. I took a picture of four inches of snow on my blooming daffodils. at least it does not last long this time of year. I guess we have to take what comes and make the best of it. I am planting my peas on fools day. MIL says they will catch up with yourn. wanna have a pea race?
We have the craziest chickens. Husband made them a little chickengate at the back fence so they can get out to the pasture and the woods. Not one has gone out yet,and it has been there two weeks. . I put the food and water right there. I put some manure there so they will scratch around and find the hole. nope. they have not even touched the manure. all they have on their little brains is to get out and into my garden. I guess I have to get up really early tomorrow morning, carry each one over and push her through. Maybe they will catch on.
well, we are still cutting up big branches and piling up burnpiles. When you are surrounded by woods in an icestorm the whole periphery of every piece of cleared land needs to be cleaned up. I am afraid we stillhave weeks of work from this. just hauling in all the piles of firewood here and there and everywhere. The cabbages are up, (cone shaped, round, and purple) so is broccoli, the peppers are stirring. I got lettuce and green onions growing in two big mortar tubs. That ought to fool the moles. I might pull a few onions in a day or two.

Well the worst we have here in the garden is morning glories. Some of the garden is in a new area that was sod last year and the things have taken over and may work me to death this summer. *The second on the list is what we always called swamp grass, a tough pale colored grass that ya just cant get rid of.

Stella, at least morning glory makes pretty flowers and does not cut up your ankles and your hands. how often have I reached into a clump of weeds and it was in there and cut me up.
I managed to clean out a bed of poison ivy without getting any. with short sleeves. I put a heavy layer of olive oil on my arms, on every bit of skin. put on gloves of course. After i was done I washed the oil off with dish soap.I read that the poison ivy poison is an oil so I figured the dishsoap should get it off. Looks like it did.

Cukes just setting on, corn tasseling out and beans a bloming. And it was a beautiful day in ky. Taking a break in the mist of everyday goings on, ain,t no crime. Sometimes its required of us, standing back and looking at something after its boogerd up can sometimes present a soulition for it. I says get a bigger hammer. ;D If your canning already i,am jealous.

Hello all! Hope everyone that needed it got a lil shower of rain today. We had some, enough to make the garden say "thanks". I have been picking cukes and making pickles, had many squash to process, lots of peppers, a few beans and NO corn. Dang it! And thas what I needed in the freezer most. The blackberries are starting to ripen good and I have already picked a few gallon and froze them. Will decide later on what exactly I want to make with them. Good thing I did lots of canning last year. Really dont think I am going to have too many tomatoes this year either. Am thinkin we have blight in them from all the wet weather.

Our thornless blackberries are having a ripe one here and there. the wild patch is not ready. I hope to get a couple of pickings.

I wish this would become standard summer weather for Kentucky.
I planted three early girl tomatos from Lowes so we would have some early ones and heaven knows what they are. One looks like an Oxheart. We have been getting tomatoes since the first of July, not many, here and there one, but enough to spruce up a salad or a sandwhich.
My lovely cornpatch is a disaster area, (sob) coons have been having a great time and those beautiful big ears my main planting was making are all half eaten. I picked one up and ate the other half. such delicious corn. (sob)

Was up till 2 am got up at 4:30 am this morning. Rough but the only way to keep my corn. It will come off any day yet. By friday at the latest i hope anyway. Picked 3 bushell beans yesterday few more matters. Have to pull the matters off before they ripen just starting to change color. If i don,t they rot, i put them in a weak bleach water about 1/2 cap for half a sink of water. Rinse and dry good. Put in a half box an they ripen nicely. A lot of extra stuff but i have to, to have any. Tough year for the gardener in ky. this year. I think its like that almost every where. Hope you all are faring better. Getting ready to pull all the half runner vines and put in fall beans, kinda late but none in the ground none on the table. Luck y,all. I guess with out sandy soil the weather has just been dandy. I just tilled two spots yesterday and want to plant more cukes and beans. I finally got summer squash. I think the chicks have something to do with it. they have been underneath the big leaves and so far not one of the plants has died. but they also eat the buds.

Well I'm back from vacation and it has rained every day since. The garden is mud but I still have to get in there and harvest whats there. My corn was a flop by normal standards this year. Stalks were too small to make big ears, but I will take what I can get and wait on the late crop. But we are having enough to can and replace what we used last year. Good thing I canned about 600 jars of stuff last year. But the rain could slow for a bit if it would, we need to finish the root cellar and my canning kitchen. Not been too hot though, humidity is a little high for me but who can complain. It Kentucky, just hang out the weather will change in a bit.

Sure could use that thing if I had it.
The gardens here are about to wind down. Dang this has been a tough year for me to garden. Way too much rain in this area. Its cools off at night and forces the plants to mature too soon and they dont produce much.

We have really had more than our share of rain this year and it sure has made gardening hard. We started diggin potates this evening and they are not worth the effort. The kennebecs are small and few of them, the red pontiacs are some better. The rain kept the garden so wet and soft we couldnt get in to spray for the bugs and they destroyed the vines and without vines you have no taters. I think we decided to dig the red ones and leave the others in the ground, too much work for the turn out. But last year was a good year for gardens so we sure wont go hungry. Still got lots canned from last season and am so thankful I did.

Your dad grew up like mine i'd say. If they did not put it up thing's got purdy slim in the winter. Dad said he's had cornbread and milk for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. And was glad to have it. Time's were not always that tough for every one. Pappaw and mamaw liked each other a lot. Because they had 13 children. That's a passel of them. I come from a long line of farmer's and coal miner's. The idea of putting up stuff was always there. People just did it, no public dole to fall back on. It was prep, not for the end of the world but to make it till the next harvest. That has been lost around here for the most part. Folk's still do it but not near as many. Fast food and the microwave have gutted this culture.

Mr Greenjeans I totally agree with you. In our area there is too much of an "I deserve or Gimme" attitude. They have developed an attitude that the government will always take care of them. And all the old ways have been tossed aside and forgotten. I was raised a farmers daughter and dang proud of it. I am so thankful for the knowledge that my dad passed on to me. He lived through the Great Depression and did fine. The family raised most all of what they ate. They canned and preserved and did their own butchering and never went hungry. They lived the simple life, no debt, nothing fancy. But they were sheltered, fed and clothed. Dad would find public jobs in the winter when the farming was done for the year, and never had a problem doing so. I firmly believe that your reputation precedes you in life. That generation believed in hard work. If only we could instill that in the younger generation.

Four best a 44, 41, 36, 33, not realy that good since i grew 9 last year that averaged 44, a 53 pounder and a 50. I don't sell them , give them to friend's. Thank's, Dr report today was very good so far it show's a 40% inprovement in vision. New glasses in 4 wks. Then the full effect should be known. Right now we are both happy camper's. OK melon's, i start out with a hole about 6 inches deep x 6 wide. Where the center of the hill is to be located, one hand full of 5-10-10 in bottom mix with dirt then3 tabelspoon's lime and 1/4 cup of powdered milk, and 3 large hand full's of cow patty, the real thing. I collect them while out 4 wheeling. Mix up purdy good and put about an inch or two of fresh dirt over it this is the center of the hill. I make half a hill then put a light covering of the cow patty, and finish the hill up. My hill's are about 16 to 20 inches tall and at least 2 1/2 across. These get 4 plant's most of the time i lose one any way. 4 max 2 min per hill. Next plastic my patch most time's it's 20x20. 6 hill's in it. When ready to put plant's in cut x's in top of hill's and plant.

I am glad we got a lot of wood in, nice and dry after weeks of dry weather. There is still a lot of damage out there. Husband has been cutting bent over young poplars that will never amount to anything, every day a couple, and the goats pig out on the leaves. sure can tell it in the milk production, too. Pastures have gotten awful dry.
we got a little over 3" of rain yesterday. what is the saying? when it rains it pours. would have been nice if it had been spread out a bit but we have to take what comes.
Garden is done for, husband is just a bit too careless with his critters. I am madder than a wet hen. He lets the cows into the yard to "eat the nice grass there" and then does not watch them enough, bingo, they are in the gardens, eat off the sweet tater vines, trumple over the cucumbers, did you know that ducks will eat off the bean blossoms, strip them all off. so do turkeys. I have nice we bean plant stalks out there. Most of my tomatoes this year, and they were nice, got ruined by chickens. We have had rain showers for the past few days, nothing major, just gentle showers. Hopefully it settled in the dirt over the root cellar good and maybe the grass seed that was sown today by Jason1911 will come up before it gets too cold. Next dry spell we hope to get the sweet potatoes out of the ground and stored for winter. Then the corn will be picked for cornmeal and hominy. Maybe by then it will be time to snuggle in for winter.

Have a great day!

Hope all our neighbors are safe tonight after most of the state being under a tornado watch most of the evening. The news had stated that there was a confirmed tornado in one county in the central part of the state. This is the first storm our area has had all year. We had rain this year but no storms. No I am not complaining. Am guessing its not too long till frost.

Have a great day!

Stella, I know I'm not in Kentucky but I read your posting. We had our first frost about a week ago. Last night it was 30, with a high today of 39 and freezing drizzle forecasted with possible snow showers tonight and tomorrow.

What would bet that it's coming your way? LOL

We have had a couple frost, although lite ones a few weeks ago, then some really nice weather. Just hope that wasnt our Indian summer. Should would like to have had a few more days of that. It has rained most all day. The ground is soggy and we still have 3 rows of sweet taters to dig. And the bread corn to pick. I had some projects I wanted to complete this week but that wont happen. The beautiful fall colors are fading fast and turning into brown on the ground. Hope everyone is all set for a long winter.

Ya can sure tell its close to winter now. The clouds today looked like they could dump some ugly weather and finally did start to sleet. Only lasted a few minutes and then turned back to a light rain but none the less it did sleet. High temp today was 60 which made the sun feel really nice. Not good weather for any outdoor projects, but good soup weather. If only I could peel taters with one hand, tater soup sounds really good.

Howdy all, we have had a hard frost for the last 3 day's. 30 this morning 27 yesterday. A little cool in the morning's here. We did not see anything but a few shower's yesterday. 14th is opening gun for deer and i,am low on venison. A friend of mine burnt his hand bad a few years ago and he took a 12" long section of 2x6 (non treated) and drove a large nail in the center. Impaled the tater on it, cut the top and sides then done the bottom. Use that as seen on tv thang to dice them and cooked them up. Might work for you. This is tater soup weather hope ya get some made.

guys, hasn't this been the most beautiful. Blue skies and the most gorgeous fall foliage. I was so glad I could see it from my window when I was laid up. Air like a crisp apple. DH put a chair out for me so I could sit for a while and watch the critters enjoying the pasture.
Well, if you can't use your foot you have to use your head. This morning I got breakfast fixed and dishes washed. My little bench is coming in handy. I can kneel with one leg and stand with the other and scoot the little bench where I need it. doing something makes you feel a lot better. This time of year I just have a hankering for apple brown betty. Would not want any when the strawberries are ripe.
Neighbors have been bringing us supper this past week and I have half a chicken left.
I guess some rice and vegetables and 'fricken chicassee" for tonight.

did you get your tater soup made Stella? I think you are worse off than I. (Wouldn't we be great on Hee Haw or something).

Its cold an I aint ready! We had a good frost last night with a temp of 31 here at our house, the coldest one so far. Finally got all the sweet taters dug, 4 more bushels of white ones. Guess we can eat sweet taters if things get really tough. lol Tomorrow we are going to pick the corn for cornmeal and get it stored to dry. I still dont have my mulching done. Not a lot can be done with one wing.
Yeh Rosie I think we make a fine pair. Sure hope you are recovering well. BTW I found that they used crazy glue on my incision. I think it is called something else, but seemed like crazy glue to me. It finally peeled off today. Am doing OK, just limited movement and very sore, still good deal of pain. But Im thinkin it will grow back.
Well our wonderful governor in all his glory decided to rename the Christmas tree in the capital a Holiday tree to pander to the left. He got more calls and flack from constituents than he could handle so he figured it was in his best interest and that of other elected ones to back up and continue calling it a Christmas tree. Guess we have to stand for something or we really will fall for anything.

Dang the weather has been nice for the past few days here. Sunny and warm for a mid-November. Tomorrow is opening day of modern gun season for deer hunters. Am sure hoping they all have good luck but I think its a little too warm for the deer to be moving much. Sure wish I could be among those but not so sure I will ever be able to hunt again. We hunt for the meat not the trophy anyway. I did see about 19 wild turkeys in our garden this afternoon tho. Am thinkin those would be good for thanksgiving dinner. Hmm, maybe a booby trap.

alll summer I saw wild turkeys galore in the lower pasture, scratching the cow patties, but the moment turkey season starts they seem to dissappear from the face of the earth. Our neighbor just shot a seven ender with bow and arrow. We have to have our two year bull butchered and I would not mind trading a little deer meat for beef. the weather has indeed been just so wonderful. I sat on the wall of my latest little terrace garden yesterday, resting my leg and watching the ducks on the pond. Most of the leaves are down though, I can see to the bottom of the woods on the hillside.
turnips, radishes and some lettuce is about the only stuff we get out of the garden. cabbage worms ate the kale. I am a bit mad at hubby's chickens , first they scratch up my plantings and then they don't eat the cabbage worms.

I think we have gotten a lil closer to winter here in Kentucky this week. It has been colder, the heat is running more today than usual. I have noticed the squirrels making more dashes from the ground to the trees totin more provisions for winter. The wild turkeys are out more grazing in the fields. And the cold weather should make the deer easier to find and harvest. Hubby got 2 the first weekend of season. Those will be skinned and cut for the freezer this coming week. The boys will likely be out this weekend also. As for me, I'm stayin right here where its warm.

Alright somebody been messin with the thermostat around here. Dang it got cold quick. Got out this morning and it almost felt like a spring morning with the wind blowing and about 60 degrees here, then it got cold again after the sun set. For some silly reason I ignored the forecast for high wind today and didnt make sure things were tied down around here. So I lost a post that was holding up a temporary fence to keep the chickens out of my onion bed and now the fence is down. Cant let the pullets out in he evening cause ya jus know that is the only place they will scratch. We had rubber roofing over the area in front of the cellar over the compost and manure we put there, needless to say all that got scattered about. Just enough stuff blown over to annoy but no major damage around our place like there was in other areas of the county.
But I think this cold snap will make for better deer hunting this weekend when muzzleloader season opens. We shall see if the great white hunter comes home with anything this trip.:yes4:

Lord i hope the shtf don't ever happen, i don't think i could take it. No one and i mean no one was ready for any thing except what i had done and it made a huge diffrence, i think it has opened a lot of eye's and this spell was a good thing. It has a lot of folk's thinking now. Basic food, water, heat and light's doing without these a day or two i think has been good for my neghibor's. They have asked about generator's long term fuel storage and food. I really think this made a diffrence it will help me out in the future when it does get rough. well, it was exactly zero at seven o'clock this morning. Seven inches is all we got. I got a good workout, shoveling paths over to the garden to get to the pigs. out to the henhouse, up to the goat shed, the hay barn and then I was finished. so since the weather was suitable I rearranged the freezer in the garage this morning, put all the stuff that belongs together in winebottle boxes (got the boxes minus the wine) and put 5 bags of snow in the empty spots.
got a big pot of soup on for tomorrow, beef and turkey gizzards, cooked some squash to make pumpkin pies tomorrow, so we are all set.
I have no idea how the roads are since we can't get out anyway. I have enjoyed being snowed in. we are four thenth of a mile from the mailbox, and I am sure our out of the way gravel road is not on the priority list. all the critters have been mighty surprised.
well, we are holding our breath, our momma goat just can't last much longer. One of our goats that really did not look so big yet, had a couple of babies over in the woods and we never noticed it and locked her up for the night. That is what we get for watching the wrong goat. We think our Great Pyrs stayed with the little ones in the cold of the night. Can't prove it but we like to think so.

The snow came in a hurry an is leaving just as quick. We only had temps in the low 20's with the storm and got 7 inches of light fluffy snow. Today it was well above freezing and most of the snow has melted, you can see the mud in more places than snow. Although there are a few hills on our road that are shaded that will be really slick for several more days. Rodger shoveled the back deck an front porch off yesterday and Luna loved playing in the snow and having him toss shovels of snow on her. The cats, not so much. They prefer the non-snowed places.

i cannot recall the snow ever being so consistent - not a whole lot, but nearly every day -

isn't that how glaciers develop ?

Its the global warming thing that keeps melting all the glaciers around here. And Im so glad too. Seems we get snow daily and it melts the next day.
Went to Richmond to have dinner with the inlaws last night, got home late and the closer we got to home the more it was flurring. While we were gone we got another half inch of snow. Just proves it dont pay to leave home, untelling what will happen while you are gone. :yes4:

Have a great day!

aint that the truth. we have been freezing our buns off. I put the big geese nesting boxes in with the goats and the little ones hop right in. keeps them a bit warmer.
the way the pigs are going we need to butcher one soon. they have plowed two gardens and I have to move them again soo. They dug up the lower garden, snow and all. when Sam calls them he goes oink oink, he is the foreign language specialist. I just call "here piggy wiggy".

We had a few really nice days here too. Today was in the 60's and even with some sprinkles it was still nice. Nice enough this past weekend that I got a few things done in the yard, still got a long way to go before spring tho. Hopefully now we will have several nice days along. Just wish the ground would dry enough so I could plant my peas, they sure didnt get done on valentines day, too much snow and frozen ground.

Have a great day!

Ok who ordered this snow? Rosie are you the one? :secret: We had light flurries all day yesterday and no snow sticking on the ground, then last evening it started and this morning we had probably 2 inches or so. And now at 2 in the afternoon it is all but gone. Now this kinda snow I can do. But gosh it leaves a mess of mud every where. I got some seedling started, celery, leeks and stuff that can go out fairly early and dang I dont have anywhere to put them and set up my light. So now Im taxing my brain today. I sure hope it dries up soon, cause it will be tater planting time in a few weeks.

Have a great day!

nope , i did not order it. that isn ot the kind of snow I like. I like a foot of it, and stay on the ground for a month so all the kids can have fun and I too. and I basically like my snow from Dec. 3d until middle of February. we had a few nice days and it is easy to get used to it. when it turned cold again I froze just awful. have not started anything. I think I will put cabbages in the coldframe. I burnt three big brushpiles this afternoon . want to move the pigs to dig up some cleared area that needs working over, so we can sow some pasture grasses.

We have had some really nice weather all week here. Got a lot done around the place too. I think we have one more day of sunshine then it is supposed to rain for a couple days. I dont mind the rain as long as its not too cool. Really wish I had my potatoes planted but the ones I ordered havent come in yet so they will have to wait. Hope everyone is enjoying the nice weather and getting things done.

Have a great day!

Well our local Shelby valley boy's high school basketball team seam's ta have taken the state title home. Now if UK can wipe the sweet 16. We will be good to go back here in the stick's. Extra nice weather we have had lately. Looking good for the garden this year so far. Those with sandy well drained soil put their taters in the ground yesterday. Were not ready yet or the ground's not, soon real soon.
