Howdy Gramma

How far from the International Peace Garden are you ? Was fun to see some of the marching bands that were there.

At one time I worked on the coal plants around Beulah.

Used to fly out of a little airport near Mercer. Flew around, but not through some of the MOAs (military operation area) out of Minot around there.
All that uncontrolled airspace around there, it was fun trying to sneak up on geese on small ponds. They really panic when something flies over them. They think it is a predator.

Hey SilverGramma! I just signed up @BHM tonight - from the "big city" (west of Mandan). Got our Lab pup from Rollette Co. My grandma was born up there - in the 1800's. Spent some of my best formative years on Metigoshe. Stay warm!

I started with reading BHM after discovering it in a bookstore and when MEN seemed to go totally yuppie. (Still not sure they have really recuperated...) I have been with the forum almost from the onset. (As a different incarnation though.) I was just getting my feet wet with the internet and I found it an interesting place to verbalize, ask questions and hang out with like minded individuals.

Hi! I didn't hunt much growing up, but came from a big Duck/Goose family. (I grew up eating hill and prairie mallards and geese even tho' I was raised in MN.) Hubby deer hunted and I got my first deer about 20 years ago out with him. I have helped train 4 retrievers (good ones!) and have mostly done some light pheasant hunting the past few years. Hubby and kids (14 and 11 girl and boy) pheasant, deer, duck and turkey hunt. Would like to do some predator hunting too, but the feds poisoned them here about 7-8 years ago and haven't seen much since then - not like we used to. As of late it has mostly been they hunt - I cook 'em. You should have some good opportunities up there. My brother, his g/f and my cousins still hunt the hills regularly. We stick around here more (work, livestock to care for). I am also more leary about just leaving the place since our German Shepard died a couple of years ago...

Haven't done any ice fishing - when you have to clean your road, keep waterers open and feed livestock and winter is as cold as it has been this year, we have been hanging inside more. Fished lots at Metigoshe as a kid (got minnows at "Happy's Dock") - lately it has been trout west of Mandan.

Picked up the mag. because it looked interesting. I am a little weird - environmental/outdoor/hunting and ENERGY related background. Found that I tend to get along better with men. I am not into t-cups, china, Hollywood and the most recent fashion trends. (I have good quality wool blazers I bought in about 1980 at Sal. Army in Grand Forks. I like them, they still fit, I wear cowboy boots, jeans and fringes most of the time and I don't care what anyone thinks!!!)
I have not subscribed but need to (hubby laid off), but pick up every issue at the store. I read on here, but go pay for the mag as I want to make sure these folks stay in business!I have someone else picking up the next issue too!

Whew! I know people that you know.....! My folks were both born in Bottineau. Dad's family moved, but mom's folks were there until they passed away in the '70's.

Did you move to town? The ice is bad this year. We smashed our old snowblower and had to get a new one this winter. It is huge and expensive, (but at least is the right size range for our tractor now) but will get us through anything if we need to get out. As you know the county can't do that. Even with the new one we are going through shear pins...! The big storm bearing down on us is going to hit Fargo worse. They are already closing down schools south and east of here. We could get 6" to 12" if they are right. The wind is more of the problem (as you would know). You clean it out and 2 hours later it is blown back in. Hope you are getting all your animals taken care of. They are saying +40 here on Saturday. I sure hope so!

Here we go again....whole state is flooding. Glad we are about 200' above the Heart (River), but the water has filled our 30'deep several acre stock dam in the past 2-3 days (it was empty), is pouring over both the spillways, filled the smaller lower dam, and the corral road we put in with the 24" and 36" culverts is staying above the backup of water....barely. And it is all heading down to the Heart. Now we are getting rain (and lightning and thunder!) and it is supposed to be snow next (up to a foot). Got calls in with friends (near here) and relatives (in Fargo) to call if they need help. Sandbagging is ugly business. Did flood clean up work in Rochester, Mn in 1978 in my neighborhood - what a mess. Hope everyone else here is finding spring to be a little more welcoming!

As if flooding and last Tuesday's blizzard were not enough - here we go again! Heavy snow and wind. The Interstate across the western half of the state is closed (they barracade it so people CAN'T go out) and we are supposed to get 10 to 17" of snow in this part of the state by tomorrow night. A couple of the ice jams are still in place locally. This is wet heavy snow so there is lots of moisture. And to think - two years ago it was in the 70's and 80's during the last week of March. Oh well, that is ND! :P

hey at least you got some to stake i've been putting in wooden fence posts and been so busy i cant see straight my mustang mare is due anytime now and i'm trying to get her situated so she can drop the foal by herself and not be so crowded.. only part of the pasture is fenced,,, and hay is nowhere to be found.. so i'm having to do alfalfa pellets and hand grazing till i can get them switched over to the pasture.. fun huh? oh btw someone gave me some goats and chickens.. fun time in the old barn tonight!!!!

We had measurable snow on vehicles on June 6th. Frost on and off (in June??!!) and rain the last two days. We were lucky we got 1.75" - going east of here 7 miles - my in laws got 7.5" and they got 10 to 12" plus east of Bismarck. Flooding again. Lost the roof of the bowling alley on the Strip - caved under the rain. Oh and hail at in laws too - up to 1.75". One of our mares foaled so far so good - he has one little fence nick. Waiting for 2 more. We have been having the best luck leaving them in the pasture with young and other mares. The herd splits into groups and we have momma, baby and her nurse maids that hover around and help mom protect baby from a little more distance. Intersting how they match up to do this. Hope you are doing better!

Any rain up there? We will head to lake next week. My folks say it has been horribly dry. We are way ahead on precip this year....we have pasture!!! Cool tho'. We have hit 90 only twice (normal is 22 times) and it was in the 60's today. Farmers worried about crops - not maturing. Glad your filly is on the ground. Our last one landed on July 4th - rolled under the fence and was stressed - we were of course gone all day at family events. Couldn't stand when we found her - and huge! I held her up (with a really hard to get out of bed teen aged kid) every hour to 90 minutes all night and then milked the mare and syringe fed her when we couldn't hold her. Flash forward to today. She has had splints on all four legs, been on anti-biotics for a couple of weeks. We will see - she went through the fence today and nipped a couple of spots on her shoulders but her scuffs from her splints and bed sores are all healing. Her knees in front are puffy but other than that she looks pretty good. I have delt with foals and stuff like this too many times to be 100% confident, but she is sassy, a good eater and hanging in there. The other two foals are doing well. Been halter breaking and starting older ones under saddle. Kids rode two - 2 year olds for the first time yesterday and today. Hope all is better with you and take care!

Lake looked good - 60's for highs for the week and humid, but wind only blew on Monday - kayaked to Canada and back one day..great time! Juneberries are very late as are the crops. Hopefully the frost will hold back for a while. Hope you got your second cutting Grandma!

Hi Gramma - Well you got snow today - so did we, but just a skiff. Down from 50+ a few days ago. 52 mph wind gust here today with sustained at about 40. Yuck! Got my last 4 loads of round bales trucked home (18 at a shot) along with another 10,000# of "idiot cubes" - home, unloaded and in the barn....YES! Still not totally ready for winter, (but are we ever?) Stay warm!
