Present - only about 50 miles from Etexhomesteader.

Both of you are lucky buggers as that is some lovely country over there. I had an option on 120 acres by Lake of the Pines but gave it up when girlfriend and I had a falling out.
Lost a few bucks but what the hey--life works that way at times and no way would I ever move to Fla to passify her--not even.

What about the Copperhead snakes? Any problems with them? When my kids were in the boy scouts I used to take them to a scout camp neat Carthage TX. The camp had a policy of "if you see a copperhead snake you kill it". For a scout camp I thought this was rather a harsh policy. Until we went treking into the brush and woods, that is. The copperheads were everywhere, man. Sigh.

I grew up in Abilene, TX which is in the beginning area of west Texas and we kids were always on the lookout for rattlesnakes and scorpions when out in the country, so I guess a few copperheads shouldn't be a problem.

You can say that again on the price of ammo! I reload, and even the components for that have gone through the roof on price. a 25# bag of birdshot has gone from 18.00 a year ago to 42.00 today. Brass, primers, rifle and pistol bullets - they've all gone sky high!. Fortunately I have a decent reserve loaded in most calibers, so I'm just loading enough for day to day use now.

I did not know that Texas gave up their right to secede. Obviously I was not around or I would have stopped that decision :o I have always held on to the hope that someday we would get brave enough and become a country. Now I am really heart broken. :'(

Hi y'all!

I'm new here. Just found this site yesterday afternoon.

I currently live in the 'burbs just north of Houston, TX. However, my husband and I are making plans now to move this summer to some land my father left me in his will. We have a small business and two homes to sell first so we both know we have a lot of work to do in order to make this move happen.

My father passed away a month ago and left my brother and I a 200 acre farm in Washington Co. The farm has been in my family since the late 1800's. There is a spot all ready for us to move a mobile home to. There is a well, septic and electricity as well as a decent size building we plan to use to a storage/workshop.

Anyway..............my vote for Texas is country. Oh how I wish it were!

Well, a while back I posted that I was planning to buy land in Arkansas due to liking mountains. However, after seeing the downward spiral of this country and getting involved with tea parties and other pro Texas groups I came to my senses. I can always visit the mountains but Texas is the best place for me and my family! I found a home and a couple acres of Texas that I fell in love with in the Magnolia area. I am moving in a month from Katy. Texas is the best state I have lived, I was in the military and moved around a good bit.

With what is going on the U.S. right now I can think of no other place to be.

Thank God for the 10th Amendment and Thank God for Texas!

Kind Regards,

I felt the same way - used to want to move to the mountains - then I realized what a great state Texas is to live in. We have great gun laws and homeschooling laws. In my book Texas is the best place to be.

By the way - I pass through Magnolia on the way from where I live now to where I am going to move to this summer. Very nice area. Especially when compared to Katy, or Houston, or Spring.

My brother and I own a little place about 10 or 15-minutes out of Magnolia. We bought it when we both worked downtown in that hell hole, Houston, and have since split it in half. He lives on his half now and I just might wind up on my part eventually. That whole area of the state, outside the towns, is really nice but for now at least I'm soaking up some mountain living.
Best regards and prayers for your success at the new place,

Otis

Grizzy you are so right about the people in east texas! We have a friend that lives here in Central Texas with us but has family in east texas. Every time he has taken us there with him all the people we have met have treated us like family (better than family if you compare them to my family). They have allowed us to hunt private land. Have invited us to stay with them when we were more than happy to camp and have invited us back time an again. It is really beautiful in east texas. DH and I wish we could afford land down there but he have not found any we could afford yet. If you come across something we would sure like to know about it. We prefer a minimum of 10 acres and probably not more than 25 acres but would consider a little more or less depending on the price :)

It thundered last week. When it thunders in winter, the old saying is that you'll have snow within a week. It always held true in NC.. It did again here, in East Texas..

Yesterday, it was sleeting on my way home from work and into the late even'n. Then the sleet transitioned into snow and by 9:30 pm, as snowflakes continued to fall, we were snuggling unner a warm pure blanket of white.. well it was pure til Sweapea christened it with a steamy.. haha

Today, our great oak and pine limbs have ice and snow on them. The roof tops are covered. The pastures and wide open places lay hidden beneath a white cloak, while our beautiful white tail deer peek out from the cover of the woods. It's a waterglobe winter's day in East Texas. For those who have grown tired of this.. Gift.. I can understand that it brings hard work in the north. For us in the South, however.. this kind of event gives a gentle pause to our concerns and efforts. It's a time to create lovely fragrances in our homes and visit with loved ones. I have a peach pie cooling on the kitchen table made from peaches from a friend's orchard and there will be a hearty beef stew for supper.

For this bear, the winter snowtime can only be seen with childlike wonder.. Woofy an Sweapea totally concur..

I was born and raised in South Texas. Mostly eveybody lived further north than I did. The saying was that when you got out of Texas you were half-way there. Live in North Mississippi now but I am still a Texan. Those of you not from Texas probably don't understand that but Texans do.

I reckon we could be our own country but we do get a lot of benefits from being in the union. After all, we get . . . . . hmmm, well, there's the . . . .. . OK, so there's no doubt that if we kept all that federal tax money we'd all be so stinking rich nobody would want to be around us. We need all those friends to keep us . . . well, taxed I guess. ;o)

Dad drives over the road all over. Had him on speaker phone a while back and one of the wee ones asked, "Grandpa... where are you now." He said, "Going through North Carolina." She didn't miss a beat and replied, "Oh... that's over in East Texas." :)

I've new here, been reading along for a few days so figured it was time to say "Howdy'all!"
I'm another transplant, moved from the extremes of northern New York in 78 and have been north of the Mason Dixon line twice since I came down here.
While I currently live south of muggy Houston I'm getting ready to do some real primitive living out in the Terlingua area - have 5 acres on the desert. Going to be in a tent for a while as I get something up in the air, probably a shack just to live the winter out in, then do a little more as time and money coincide.
My real interest here is in the 'off grid' aspect of living out there, obviously the one thing I can count on is plenty of sunlight.
Enough ... I'll be reading along for a while before I start getting myself in trouble with the management.
Og, if you want to follow along on my trials and tribulatiopns I have a forum up also at (deleted - links to personal sites allowed in Member Websites, after you become a confirmed member)

Grr... I am so sorry Christine :( I meant to leave a message on here to figure a way to find you and in the rush completely forgot :( I remembered about the time we were passing Spring Branch. Thought the campground would have wi-fi so I'd use the one laptop we brought but it didn't. I was listening to all the folks there to see if I heard someone call your name so I could ask if yall were the ones from the net :)

Noticed a couple of the workers looking me over. Figured they were wondering where my name tag was. Big fella, full beard, overalls, figured they thought I worked there and was taking too long of a break :P. Anyhow, toward the evening, a fellow approached me and asked if I was from England. Turns out, they had a fellow working there from England a few years back and I guess I looked like him lol.

Man... I love that fest. I will definetly go back next year. That was a blast. The in-laws had a good time. The kids had a great time. Sure did like it.

Oh... and kept seeing couples on scooters along 281 and 46 wondering if they were debi and DH... hehe.

We are a Republic, a State in the United States of America, once belonging to Mexico. Six flags have flown over Texas and we still retain citizenry who brought those flags.

We are a multifaceted State of citizens, the weather in Texas is multifaceted as is the terrain. We have it all from mountains to desert sands to sea coasts and everthing in between. We also have the only living stand of trees that were around with the dinosaurs.

Texas itself is an ancient seabed, a huge portion of the State is at or below sea level, areas in north Texas are only 500 to 800 feet above sea level. Texas can also boast that we have the cleanest drinking water in the entire nation.

Texans are a free and independent people, strong and friendly but definately not someone to shove around. When I was a girl we were still called "Texicans" by a lot of people.

The Texas economy is number one in the Nation, and Texas also ranks number one in the nation as recipients of the highest awards and highest numbers of those awards presented for the sciences. Red Adair, our famous fire fighter for oil rigs, was asked by President Ronald Reagan to help put out a fire in Space. Adair's men put out the fires on the rigs in Iraq when Saddam decided to set them ablaze.

The first car purchased by a Texas citizen living in Rosebud Texas was described as a fire engine red Model T Ford that had buggy wheels and two lanterns on the front for lights. This car was purchased by a Doctor Aycock who drove a horse and buggy to Waco Texas to make the purchase.

We celebrate a lot here. From American Indians to the ringing of the bell in Buddhist temples, we are the Family of the Nations in the truest sense of the word. Every culture is celebrated in Texas. And that means we have really good people here, and really good food here as well.

We smile a lot because we know how good we have it here.

Have left several times, but always come back. Central Texas raised born in Arizona but consider myself a Texan. We are currently a state, but the way things are going I hope we do become our own country and say the h**l with the rest of the union. We seem to be the only ones who know how to do it right.

East Texan around the Huntsville area....lovin it:)

Lived many places in this life....but my heart has always belonged here.
Happy to back, and livin my dream of self sustaining. (not quite there yet)

My off grid experiece was in Bedias Tx about 30 miles from Huntsville.
How I loved that place.

My Dad did alot of the dirt work building Herman Park--the Astro-dome and Sam Rayburn Dam out of Jasper.

I have pics of my Great-Grand-father on cattle drives in the late 1880's very delicate now because of their age.
My grand-father was killed in an oil drilling explosion in the late 20's at Sour Lake in some of the old Spindle Top areas.
My Great Grand Father on my dads' side was at one time in the 20's Sheriff of Live Oak and Jim Wells counties--the counties were so poor they couldnt afford full time lawmen.
He later became a Texas Ranger for a short period before his death.

Ahhhhhhhhhhh what history we have.

Born and raised here in the state. Have lived all over the state.

Moved to East Texas 6+ years ago and am living on the borderline of Cherokee & Rusk County. Like it very much except it just gets too cold in the winter (anything below 60 degrees is too cold :)).
