What model? Sounds high for an M44. Might be a good deal for an M38 depending on bolt configuration.

Depending on which model, but in general it is a great price. They have been slowly going up over the last few years, to where I am seeing them now for about $250 and up at some of the gun shows. I have a M1891/38 and love it. Its great for distance and absolutely no recoil, my wife was intimidated by it at first but she loves shooting it now as well. I'd personally say grab it! That's my 2cents.

Are you in the market for an inaccurate, heavy, unwieldy rifle in an uncommon caliber with a gritty trigger and no provisions for mounting optics? ;)

Why not wait another paycheck and buy something like a used Savage in a caliber like .308, .30-06 or .223?

It'd be superior in every way, and you wouldn't look foolish showing up at deer camp with it.

Buy it.7.62x54 is a good caliber. Those old rifles are tough and will take a litteral beating and still work fine.See if the seller will throw in a few boxes of shells too.I can tell you first hand that rifle will strike like the hand of God at 600+yards(I ended up on the business end of one in '86)If you are looking for a good all around shooter and be able to get ammo for it cheap at gun shows thats it;however if you what a 1inch group at 500yds that it aint.Remember all told MOST deer(and his cousins) are taken at less than 100yds both in the WEST and East,North and South.

It's the short one. The carbine. I dont imagine hitting anything smaller than a tree at 600 yds.

if the tool kit and some stripper clips are included, i would get one.

Rafael

It's got the tool kit and pouch and 1 magazine.
Are extra magazines easily available?

Tapco,Midway usa and several others plus look for srare parts/excessories at gun shows.I think even Cabellas sells aftremarket stocks for it,Get on the net there are all sorts of stuff you can customize it with.Good luck.

If your just looking to for something to shoot, a trunk gun, or what not $140 for a Mosin Nagant 1891/30 is a little steep even when they try to throw you the bone of saying "wow look at all these great things you get with it"....even $140 for an M44 is a little steep.

Wait for a local gun show and you can buy these things for $95-$110, well in my area you can. I use to collect Mosin Nagants I still have 6 of a number of diffrent makes and from diffrent countries, good rifles. If you want a true beater "Omega arms" sells CHinese type-53's in fair condition for $50, they are shootable but are beat to hell.

They use to be $35 each thats when I picked mine up, but after paying $20 shipping, then the transfer fee if you dont have a C&R, Id just go with a gun show Mosin Nagant for around $100.

Gun shows here are rare and there is a waiting period for it. Kinda hard to pick it up 10 days later.

Sorry man,I really feel for you.Spent some time there and I'm glad to be back in the USA.....lol.Firearms prices are steadly going up so bear that in mind if you pass on anything, and its especially tuff where you are in the land of oz.Here where I reside you just can't find ammo, even at wallyworld. It's always sold out.Localy gunshop says The CHANGE of "O" has been good for his sales,go figure.Good Luck

there is a couple sites to browse through,,I have 3,and M38,an M44 and a 91/30,,not bad rifles really,no frills, not fancy, but will get the job done,,but I think the good REv Aaron may be confused, the Nagant has plenty of recoil, especaliy the carbines,,and if you shoot surplus ammo at dusk you get quite a cool fireball also :D

The good thing is that except for 22LR, ammo is available here. I only find 3 or 4 boxes of pretty much any caliber. It seems pricey to me.
50 rounds of 9mm from winchester or remington goes for about $17.

Went outside for a smoke and had a thought.I belive it's H&R that makes a breakopen rifle w/interchangable barrels that is relatively cheap. You could possibly have a rifle w/diferent calibers,ie 223 for prarie dogs 9mm for plinking and 308 or 30'06 for longer range work.My granson can reload the breakopen 20ga. of his very fast and hit with it and he's only 12 and only gets to shoot when he comes here 2 or 3 times a year.Just a thought....

I picked up an M44 carbine 18 months ago for $75 plus 1200 rounds for another $150. Of course that was then and now is now. About the best I can do open sight is 4" @ 200 meters but I'm happy with that for an old throw away crowbar with a pig sticker and who knows, if push comes to shove it will bring home the meat. I figure for the money it's a bargin all around and if called on to do some dirty work I'm way ahead so figuring on the inflation of the fiat dollar you just might have a keeper, come what may.

Prices are going up with out a doubt, So I would buy it.
Have several, m38, m44 and a 1895m, all are fun to shoot.

I would say that they are min of paper plate type rifles, with my old eyes, and open sights, but are still inexpensive, deploy-able tools.( doesn't matter too much if the get stolt....)

sorry I'm a little late to this thread.....

I would NOT buy it

I got mine for $40 in great shape.

Since then I've gotten an dealers FFL and now see the wholesale costs of them. right now a arsenal refinished 91/30 rifle with laminate stock wholesales for around 100$ with the ammo pouch and cleaning kit....the arsenal refinished with regular non-laminate stock whole sales for $75

40% markup is waaaaayyyy high. 120$ seems more reasonable...

sadly CA requires a separate registration to ship guns to CA dealers....I am not registered with CA or I would offer to get you one for way less, even after shipping.

also...they used a fixed box magazine....you load it one-by-one or with stripper clips. you dont really use a magazine like modern rifles....but you can load stripper clips into the gun very fast if you wanted to.

I paid 100.00 for my 91/30 a couple of months ago and that was because someone put it on layaway and didn't come back for it even thought they only had one payment left. When I see them in my area they run upwards of 185.00 unless you can catch one like I did. Mine was in pristine condition too, even had the original bayonet. I saw one at a pawn shop a town over and it was beat up, someone had tried to camo paint it and in general poor condition and they would not negotiate down from the 180.00 on it.

As for not being able to mount a scope there is a rail that allows you to mount a scope by removing the pin from the rear spring site. I haven't done it just read it. I have been looking to put a scope on mine and there is alot of information on it out there.

I use the old ammo most of the time because there is tons of it around here and it's pretty cheap. It really does make a cool light show too at night :) I am not a great shot but I do pretty good with my nagant. There are pleanty of accessories out there too on the internet. Cleaning kits etc. They aren't expensive either.

I've seen plenty of them with scopes mounted on.

I got my M44 last year for $95 after tax and the prices haven't increased since.

They were selling the m44s here for $99 but the condition was terrible. The one I found for $140 is in good shape.

Rafael,

go on Gunbroker.com and see what you can find....I looked earlier and they are in great shape and better priced.

call around to local dealers to see who has the lowest price for transfers.... remember its usually negotiable....it takes almost no effort for a dealer to do...so it really doesnt justify the $30 that some dealers charge.

I think $140 is a decent price for an old Mosin. Is it decent condition? Shootable? There ya go.

I like them old M44's a lot. It's just a cool old rifle. Also, it's got a bayonet, so that if you shoot a feral hog, you can also stab it if ya need to. That's a nice touch.

Guns and ammo is expensive, but I feel that the Mosins are still a good deal.

Rafael
10-09-2009, 02:13 PM
I paid for it. I'll have it after the waiting period.
I've never had good luck with gunbroker.com
Everytime I find something at a good price they either dont ship to calif or the shipping and fees dont make it a better deal than I can get locally.

Cool. I think you'll like it.

Personally, I don't get too worried about accuracy with old crusty bolt actions like a Mosin. If I can hit a pie plate reliably with an old milsurp rifle, I'm plenty happy.

Some guys can wring awesome accuracy out of an old warhorse like that, but well...I'm happy to just nail a deer sized target at 200 yards!

Went to pick it up today and the store had a 91 30 for $99, and it was in good shape.
Took it and and saved $40.

Cool. I hope you like your new 91/30. Here's hoping you picked a good one!

Time was, that $40 you saved would have bought you a sealed tin of original russian ammo too. But hey, $40 is $40.

I find the 91/30 to be just a tad too long..I feel like an old timey musketman with a six foot rifle when I shoot one! Put a bayonet on one, and when you run out of ammo, you also have a spear. :D

Anyway, shoot the heck outta then thing. They're a lot of fun.

Rafael

Long is good.
I figure if the accuracy of that thing is halfway decent I'll be good to 600 yds.

I have a 1943 made 91/30, and a 1948 M44.
Welcome to the ranks of military surplus shooters. I personally would rather buy and shoot a WWII Mosin or Mauser or Garand or Springfield '03 than some modern Winchester or Savage. Of course it probably helps that I'm a military history buff.:D
I have 2 Mosins, Springfield 03A3, Mauser 98K, M1 Garand, Chinese SKS, Romanian AKM, and a Springfield Armory M1A. Handgun wise I'm weak with just a Walther P38 and a Colt Government Model.
What year was you Mosin made? It may have seen combat.

Russian designed weapons (Mosin, SKS, AK) will be running long after an AR has become dead weight.:)

It's russian made in 1938. Hopefully it was used to eliminate a few nazis.

Be careful, it's addicting!:D
