View Full Version : What I would like to have.
I wish someone made an AK action with the following attributes"
1. Standard calibers such as .22LR, .223, 7.62X39, 7.62X51, tec.
2. Different barrel lengths of 16" to 24".
3. Quality fold down peep sights graduated to 600 meters, and an integral picatinny rail.
4. Non match rifle to group 2 MOA with decent rifle grade ammo. Precision rifle and ammo to group to 1MOA
5. Ambidexterous operation for safties, mag release, etc.
6. A decent trigger!
This would give the reliability and accuracy of the M1 Garand wich is more than acceptable for combat usage in a smaller more compact package. I know the AK is far more reliable, but that isn't needed as we are not some mountian tribesmen that don't know how to clean our weapons. All for a cost of 600.00 to 800.00!
Yeah, I know I'm dreaming, but I also know it could be done too! Maybe the Galil already does this for more money, but I don't know.

That sounds like the ideal setup.

Maybe if you bought a top of the line AK, and then dumped a ton of money into it, you could get what you're looking for. I agree an AK in .22 would be sweet. I've seen some knockoff lookin Armscor AK-22 type rifles, but I've never got a chance to really scope one out.
What I'd like is a .357 mag semi auto carbine. Like an M1 Carbine, only it shoots .357 mag! That would be the cat's meow, in my humble opinion. :man_in_love:

Galil does you AK in .308 and .223.
UNIVERSAL made the M1 Carbine in .357 mag and .256 Win Mag back in the '60s.
In the 1990's Plainfield made a few M1 carbs in 9mm win mag which is equiv to .357.

here is a starting point in your search.. In addiona there are Training rifles out there in 22 cal for many rifles.
here is one:

I likewise wish Ruger would chamber the mini 14 for 357.
and I would also like to see a 1874 sharps in 22 mag - that I could afford. now that would be fun.

My dream gun has been made, I just can't find one. I have been searching for years, 4 years ago, I missed one by two days. It is the bottom weapon in this photo.

I checked out the Saigas and others, and found that magazines are really expensive. Man, I hate that!
There is an outfit that converts M1 Carbines to .357 mag, and another that converts to .45 Win Mag. That would put some punch into them
However, using good SP ammo in a carbine will give it the effect of a .357 for the most part, and that ain't bad.

What are those rifles, I don't recognize them.

UNIVERSAL made the M1 Carbine in .357 mag and .256 Win Mag back in the '60s.
It's too bad Universal hasn't made any within the last 40 years.
I'd love to buy one, but apparently they quit making them almost half a century ago. Story of my life...day late, dollar short!

I don't know if you are familiar with the WINCHESTER MODEL OF 1910 SL. It was marketeD as "THE HAMMER OF THOR"
The cartridge case was a straight taper derived from the .35 REM. shortened. It was quite powerful putting out a .403 diameter 240 gr bullet at about 2200 fps. During WWI the FRENCH Army placed the single largest order for 16,000 when the realities of trench watfare set in. It was very effective charge stopper under 100 yatds. It is rumored that Colt made a single prototype 1921 Thompson in an attempt to create the first assault rifle concept.
It is best known in the US as a prison guard tower weapon. But not nearly as well known as the same rifle in the Model of 1907 configuration chambered in Winchester .351 SL caliber.
My point is that when the specification was laid down for the Cal. .30 Carbine tjere were already two much more effective cartridges available to build it around, either one would have been a much superior jungle rounds than the 30 M1 which was itself derived from the WIN .32 SL created for the first in the same series of semi-auto carbines the WINCHESTER MODEL OF 1902.
Had the M1 been designed from the beginning around the .401 or even upped to an equivalent length .45 (i.e. .45 WIN MAG+) we can only imagine how that would have affected history and in particlar jungle warfare well into the 1970's.
Today the Irwindale Arms 10mm magnum would make another interesting possibility. As I mentioned Plainfield in its last iteration made a few M1 carbs in 9mm WIN Mag. Within the past year I have seen one offered for sale for $1000.
Universal ALSO made a seven shot pump-action magazine fed .44 Magnum version of the M1 Carbine. They are so rare that original magazines sell for $150/ea.

Well, if you just can't stand the sloppiness of an AK, I have the gun you are looking for.
The Ruger Mini-14 0r 30. As stated in another post of mine, much of the mechanical function of an AK was taken straight from the M1 Garand, and the Ruger Mini series are little Garands. Great rifles, without the "bad-guy" looks.
Oh yeah, and you don't have to be a tribesman in the hills to suffer from weapons malfunctions. Take a perfectly clean gun, sling it over your back, go out in the woods for a week in the driving rain. Sleep with it. Crawl through the dirt with it. Leave it to bump around in a vehicle with you. Shoot it several hundred times a day. Spill food on it. Clean it in the pitch dark with only the cleaning kit you brought in on your back. While still dark, shoot it some more. Get to the point where you would really rather not be carrying it, and the smell of the CLP and gunpowder gook on it makes you slightly sick.
After that week, a pretty normal one for military or rough use, see if it still works as advertised. If it does, then you have a winner.
