My wife and I usually keep plenty of cans of roast beef on hand for a quick fix bbq sandwich recipe we like. Well, in the last 2 months we haven't been able to find any in the stores either in AZ or MT and they used to be quite plentiful. There is plenty of canned turkey, chicken, tuna, etc, but never any beef. This is at local grocery stores, Costco, Walmart etc. all of which used to carry it. Hereford is the brand we could find most places, but we'd be happy to find any of it as we are down to 2 cans.
She asked me if this was a problem nationwide and I said I didn't know but it was odd and I would ask around to find out.
So, have any of you noticed this in your area too? Hopefully we're not the only ones that like this stuff, or else too many people do and that's where it all went?

AZ:
I live in OK. and I have encountered the same problem at Wal-Mart, K-mart and the local grocerie stores. Although the do carry The dried beef in a jar (Armour I think) except it is extremely sdalty and high priced.
There is plenty of canned beef stew but that makes for miserable sandwiches and does not mix well with BBQ sauce.
I too, have wondered about this but no one in any of the stores has an answer to to "Wheres the Beef?"

I use to get it at dollar stores. All of them use to carry it. I haven't looked lately. Check them out.

Well, that's at least three states in the Northwest, Southwest and Central US. I remember reading an article back around January or February that said dairy farmers were selling their cows for beef due to a slow dairy market and high beef demand. I hope there's no connection there. Where is all the beef? I just sent an email off to Hereford and see what they say. I sometimes think I take too many mental notes or over analyze things, but once in a while it pays off.
I thought I wasn't just imagining things, but I'll see who else chimes in. It might take people some time to check their stores and report back as well.
We've heretofore always bought case lots of canned beef at our local discount grocery but when we went last week to rebuy there was none in that store and none of the other stores we've since shopped in western MD and surrounding areas of PA and WV have had it either. We even checked one Walmart in Morgantown last week and it was out, too.

We visited the Costco in Des Moines, Iowa today where we have purchased canned beef before; there was none today! Glad I have started canning beef for myself - I buy rump roast when it is on sale and can it in wine sauce - it is much more tender than the purchased beef and costs me about what I spent on the canned purchased beef per can last year - about $1.80 per 12 ounce jar.

I got canned roast beef from Amazon. I didn't really like it, but I think it might be OK fixed up a little--as you probably know how to do. I can't send you the image I made of it, I guess 'cuz I'm still a "newby". It was canned by Libby as follows. (They advised that they have only four orders available at the moment ~ 7 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time, 10-26-09)
Libby Roast Beef with Gravy, 12-Ounce Cans (Pack of 8)
Buy new: $25.73
Get it by Wednesday, Oct 28 if you order in the next 21 hours and choose one-day shipping.

Hormel makes canned roast beef as well, also some Wal-Marts and other stores will occasionally special order items if you ask.

Check the web site listed on the can & see if you can order directly from the company. Have found quite a few companys that I can order direct from.

Lehman's sells canned roast beef, chicken and turkey. We keep a bunch of it on hand and it tastes very good. I made a Stroganof from the beef and their flat noodles that everyone loved.

I asked my wife to check.
She just called and said Wal-Mart has Hormel brand Roast Beef with gravy.
12 oz. can is $3.95.

Here is another link for canned beef, not exactly roast beef I guess, but they sell 28oz cans individually or by the case.

I've gotten it at Costco in the past, but they don't carry it anymore. But I still have some cans left. It tasted alright.
Canning it yourself sounds like a good idea as an alternative.
