Hello, new to the site, found it googling an old coal fired hot water heater I aquired. I live in upstate ny, have a 17 acre homestead, off the grid that butts up to several thousand acres of state land. I've been fixing it up and plan to move in this coming spring. Lots to do and just reading a few of the posts here on different topics this site is just what I was lookin for!
Well, all for now I just wanted to introduce myself, now back to reading up on stuff! :)

Welcome Digger! May I ask where in upstate? We are in the southern Tug Hill region about 25 miles north of Syracuse.

I am not on here as often as I would like, but you will find this interesting, fun and informative. Enjoy and good luck with your homestead!

Here is a link to my blog about my homestead project, still a part time thing but moving closer to full time.

Hi cabinman,

Must be pretty darn close I'm roughly 20 as the crow flies north of syracuse, Happy Valley/Kasog lake/Little John area. My land is right in the Happy Valley wildlife management unit about 6 miles from Williamstown. Sigh, mine is still a part time thing as well, I'm there as often as I can, hope to make the move there full time this coming spring.

Digger,

Looks like we are practically neighbors. Our property is only 10-15 minutes from where you are.

Let's stay in touch. I have a couple of friends doing similar things in the area. One guy is building a straw bale house and is well on his way to a smale scale self sufficient farm. Another guy in Hannible doing the same (minus the straw bale) and on a slightly larger scale.

Very cool!
