Hi all,
To make a long story short, my wife rescued a cottontail we found in our horse pen last year. It had its eyes closed. A cat had gotten into the den and ate its siblings. This rabbit has become a pet, we can hold it and it comes to the sound of our voices. Currently, we are getting ready to move to Ohio, my wife called AZ fish and game who told her we have to give up the rabbit as it is considered a wild animal and property of the state. If we take it across state lines there is a big fine in order if we get caught. My 5 year old does not understand any of this. He helped to feed the bunny with an eye dropper.
Is there any domestic breed of rabbit that looks similar to a cottontail and does anyone know where I can find one? Thank you. -John
Google "rabbit rare heritage breed" maybe one will match your cotton tail
Good luck

I picked up one out of the free column one time that had the same coloring, but floppy ears....so there must be some out there....
There is a specific name for the coloring, but I can't remember right now.

OK,I got my rabbit book out.
There is a breed called Palomino That looks very similar, just larger than a wild rabbit. The mature weight should be somewhere around 10lbs.
The book I have does not show what the underside coloring is like, but the one in the picture looks very wild rabbit colored.
An English Lop can have the same coloring but has huge floppy ears.
There is also one called Satin that might come in a similar coloring.Slightly smaller in size than the Palomino breed.
Hope this helps.Good luck.

Thanks folks. The fish and game warden called my wife last week and told her if she did not go and surrender the rabbit she would be cited and possibly arrested. So we had to surrender the little critter. Next time we will keep our mouths shut. You try and live within the guidelines of the law and something stupid like this happens.

When the game warden called your wife last week, you should've said that already released it back to the wild.

I agree with Paul. I told them the bunnie had already been released and packed the bunnie up for its new home in ohio.
I just recently smuggled some black squirrels from my birth place in ohio to my woods here in indiana. They have never seen a black squirrel here...... yet.

I don't think I would admit to criminal activity on an open board.
Better hope you haven't ticked anyone off.
Just ask the guy that was bragging about poaching a deer.

Indiana DNR dident have a problem with them coming to Indiana....... Ohio had a problem with them leaving.
If Ohio wants them back they can come and get them

The black squirrels are not originally from Ohio anyway. If what I had heard is right the were a transplant from Canada. Some field researchers brought them to Kent and Columbus. They have spread a lot since then. We have them in Cleveland now too

ps don't know yet if they taste any different then grays or browns

the only place I have ever seen the blacks was south of canton in the area I grew up.
They taste like browns but seen to be more aggressive then browns in the wild.

are cottontail rabbits on the agenda during hunting season?
If they are not a sport animal then your fish and game warden is full of shi$#%%$#@.
if they are, well....they have to catch you first.
