View Full Version : My dog isn't talking to me today

I put a collar on him for the first time in his life (he's 1 yr.) He is majorly insulted. He won't look at me, and wouldn't move for the longest time. Then he flopped over, like it was so heavy and restrictive he couldn't walk. When all he got for that effort was gales of laughter he tried rubbing it off.
He spent most of the day sitting with his back to me, no matter where I was in the yard, he'd come fairly close and then sit facing away...attitude or what?
He's worn a harness before when he's been on a leash, but never a collar.
I was warned not to put a collar & leash on this type of dog, he has a really long spine, there is a lot of miniature daschund in him, as well as a whole lot of other things.
I need him to get used to a collar though, we'll likely be moving to town over the summer and he'll have to wear one when he's out in the yard there, just in case he ever gets out of the yard.
When we walk though he'll have a harness for the leash.
Dogs are funny people, who says they can't speak their mind?

That is too funny, I know that my 4 legged daughter gives me attitude anytime she infers abuse, I just remind her that she is half shepard, half dingo, and all spoiled. Just the way it should be.

My Rat Terrier does the same thing. Whenever I touch another dog she gets jealous turns around and sits down, wont look at me, and won't let me pet her. Funny little animal.

Karen I know this is belated but I'm curious as to why you want her to have a collar when she is willing to wear a harness? Any necessary tags, rabies/license, can be attached to a harness just as easily as a collar. In fact if you have a chain link fence around your yard I'd recommend the harness as being safer. I still remember back in 1959 when we were watching the across the street neighbors dog while they went on vacation. I happened to glance over there and saw the dog hanging from the top of the fence by his collar. My mother didn't believe me until my stepfather came home and saw the dog. By that time he had chocked to death. Believe me I remember that even thought it's been almost 50 years!! Something I never want to see or read or hear about again.

Hugs,
*Well from the posts, that tells me many dogs out there are "ruling the roost!"
*There is now a microchip that can be inserted under your dog's skin, that carries all your and your dog's info. Just ask your vet. Most shelters now look for that chip when an animal is brought in, as do police, etc. Find out if this is so in the area in which you are moving, and if so, it's a reasonable alternative to your dilemma.
*That said, harnesses are better, in my opinion, but if you'd like him to wear a collar, you simply train him to it, have him wear it a few minutes only per day, making it fun (rewards! play!), while being firm and gentle. Increase the time as he adjusts. Just a little caution, though - it too my Shaina nearly 5 years to accept her gentle leader! I hope you're patient...

I will say as a man who has cattle, and Dogs..I HATE that CHIP! A they can scan that thing from the highway..so they know if your dog is up to date on his shots.. When in cattle, they can scan the roadway leading to the sale barn and know every animal in the truck... what next, YOU??
Not only do I feel that tec makes mankind just a little more lazy.. (remember when people would talk to people in person?) But it makes Big brother just a little more real. In using that chip, Animal owners make it just a little more possible to use the chip in people... I don't want a chip in the back of my hand or stuck in my head. I also don't want to be forced to tell people how I take care of my dogs or share info about my live stock.

Hugs,
I don't like the idea of the chip, either, yet sometimes, like in this case, I do suggest it. I haven't gotten one for Shaina, nor am I likely to get one for her! I believe in good training - it's always more effective.

Wow I had no idea that chips could be scanned from such a distance. I was forced to chip my dog when we went abroad, otherwise I would never have put him through it.
About dog-jealousy, my Shih Tzu has got it; this Christmas I got a pair of rabbit slippers and the things followed me around everywhere (on my feet) and he got so mad at them. That night as I took them off and went to bed he tore into them, shaking and tearing at their ears. I had to hide them in the closet. It took two days before he accepted them and that's only after he taught them exactly which white fluffy thing was Alpha in this house.
About collar training, great idea I agree. We just can't let our dogs be the boss of us and an easy way would be to treat and give attention while the collar is on, and when it's taken off, ignore, don't make eye contact and don't treat. That way having the collar on will mean good things and worth looking forward to and having.
This is a great thread! Neither my dog or cat is speaking to me today. I went to put the cat out this morning, didn't see the dog in the cat food bowl. (clever Border Collie) The cat enlarged to the size of a raccoon and the dog took off-she's afraid of the cat...I'm lonesome!! VK
