I bought that in 1972 then kept adding all the others by Belanger, Miller,Logsden et al. Also 10 Acres is Enough, 8 Acres & Independence(which my dad read as a young man) and more. I had quite a library at one time. Many are redundant but who cares! they were/are fun to read. I guess we pretty much lived as Ed and his family did for quite awhile. still do to varying degrees. Imagine, those poor devils who have to exist on a skimpy city lot, if ya can!

I sure feel for them.
I had this book too I bought it back around 1998 or so. It burned in a fire I had and I never replaced the paper version, but I did download it.
I think it should be a "must read" for anyone wanting to homestead.

I have a number of "homesteading" books, starting with ones I bought in the early 70's, too. Some are worse for wear as many times as I've read them over the years. The information is timeless and priceless, too. In fact two of them are sitting beside my computer right now.
5 Acres & Independence by Kains
One Acre & Security by Angier
In the stack there's also
Roughing It Easy - Dian Thomas 1978
Roughing It Easy 2 - Ditto

ya, that was only 5 acres wasn't it!
I only have 6 now, gave the rest to the kid. Cripe, I cant take care of it as I would like to now. The up side is the wild life appreciates my end to cultivation, horses & cattle.

I looked on it but can't find where I downloaded it. It is a .pdf file and 13MB. I can email a copy to you if you are on high speed internet. If you are on dial-up, you might not be able to download it. If you want to try it, you can send your email address to me with a PM.

Thank You for the link!
I have now added this book to my library!!!! I have it saved on my computer plus I printed a full copy. I like having a printed copy so if the computer is down I can still read it.

That book is still under copyright and still being published!! LOL

If you can, find the first or second edition, it's the REAL book, with 300 plus pages, much better than the above, Gardenway's (Storey Publishing, LLC) ridiculous 72 page botched, butchered and scandalous re-edited edition of 1973.
YMMV!
Just my 2 cents!

Martin,
Thanks. I didn't realize that there was an "original" edition that has more.

I used to own this book. Lost it somewhere. It is a really great book. The one that I had was over sized and I had trouble storing it. I have considered reordering it but haven't gotten around to it. I also have five acres and independence. This one is worn from the many readings and flipping back and forth between sections. An excellent book. I also like "The Self Sufficient Life and How to Live it" By John Seymour.
