View Full Version : how old was your oldest pet?
i have a cat who just turned 18. her name is bean. she's my baby and i've had her since i was 12. she's definately starting to show signs of her age, but she still has quite a bit of spunk left. i can't bear the thought of her passing on, but i know that it will be inevitable. i did have a friend in college who had a cat who was 26!! so i like to think that bean and i have a few more years left together...
what are your stories?

My ole girl, Harley-Anna is 15. I found her when she was bout 6 months old after an ice storm. I used a different stairway to my apartment(it was covered & ice free)& she looked up at me & gave me the most pitiful meow I'd ever heard. Under my coat she went & into my heart ever since. She's hard-headed & she's going to do things HER way. She also has a kind heart & generally is the first to welcome a new arrival into the family. I've almost lost her several times & the last time, she didn't bounce fully back. When she goes, it'll break my heart.

The oldest pet (?) I ever had was Princess, my pony. She was a *workin' animal*, too, per Grandaddys orders that "every mouth on this farm earns it's feed!"
Grandaddy got Princess when I was around 6 and my sisters and I were staying the summer while Dad and Mom were in France. They always sent us *back home* during summer and some holidays.
Grandaddy went to the livestock auction and saw this shetland pony, he bought her for $25. and that included two bridles, a saddle and a halter! He brought her home and told us girls that she belonged to the first one that had the guts to ride her. Within two seconds, she belonged to me! (My sisters were such chickens!)
Princess was hard-headed, stubborn and went her own way 90% of the time, but my grandad trained her to pull a sledge to bring firewood down to the house and to pull a small cart.
Princess had to be put down when I was 16. She was already around 5 or 6 years old when when got her.

I've never really had an "old" pet myself. The oldest one I have right now is a cat that's about 8 years old. My youngest sister and her husband had a miniature poodle who lived to be 17 years old and was totally blind and deaf amid other troubles when they finally decided to put her to sleep. They didn't want to but the vet finally convinced them that she was suffering and it would be the kindest option.

Pamela Sue, my cat, is 10 years old. I've
had her since she was born. She was the
rut of the litter and no one wanted her.
She is very tiny. People have made comments
I should feed her more. No, the vet just
said she is small. Weighs 3 1/2 lbs.
She still plays like a kitty. The only thing is
now she doesn't always make her mark when
she jumps. Sometimes she just can't jump
as high and falls back on the floor.
She a Southern girl and we all know Southern
girls have two first names. Therefore, the
Pamela Sue name.
I can't even imagine her passing. We have been
through so much.
I wanted her to have babies. She was the
best mother. I woke up one morning and she
was between my legs. I took the covers off
and there she lay with her little babies, all
cleaned up and not one bit of blood in the
bed. I can't imagine how she gave birth and
never made a mess. Or, how she did it all
without waking me up.

My oldest dog was 14, and I have another that will be 14 in February, he still is in good health, although his eyesight and his hearing aren't all that good. He still enjoys life very much, does sleep quite a bit, but then he's earned that right.

HHHHmmmmm.......oldest pet, well it seems that most all our pets live well into their teens.
I think the oldest was Davis the cat.He was two when got him(aprox) from the animal rescue group. He was somewhere around 18,but my guess is he was older than 2 when we got him,I say by my guessitmation that he was closer to 25.Parents had to put him down just before Christmas 2004,then one year later lost their(formerly by brother's) dog who was 17.
My current cat Cleo is 10,she picked us when we were at the animal shelter looking at another cat.
Our pets have always lived so long that I've never really had too many.Growing up it was always Bashful,17,Nuisance,18,and later Spunky.Spunky was only 13 when we lost him to old age.
We had a couple here and there that either got sick and died or just didn't work out.
When my then future hubby and I moved in together I brought my dog Sampson with me.He was only 12 1/2 when we lost him this past Jan,but I think that was a good age for a dog as big as he was.

I had a truely wonderful but grumpy siamese named Egor who made it to 23 years. He was half blind and deaf but still thought he could take any animal in the neigborhood.
Can still hear that throaty yowl.

OH martin I'm so sorry to hear about your loss........ :'(
When we lost Sam in Jan,is was like losing a child,I still miss him dearly...
We didn't have anywhere to bury him,so we had him cremated, and will bury him on our property when we get it.That way we can give him the repsect he deserves, and a final resting place that suits him...........

Our Cairn Terrier, Thistle, lived a month past her 15th. We had a Jack Russell, Daisy, who lived past her 12th birthday, but regretfully died in a house fire last year :'(; I had hopes of keeping her many more years.
I have two young Jack Russells now :), and hope to have them many more years!
...and Martin, please accept my condolences on your loss.

So sorry Martin, you'll never find a more devoted friend than your dog. My last Golden Retriever will be 14 next month, I dread the day that I lose him, but I will replace him because I need animals in my life.
We had a cat since I was real young, he was the runt of the litter, & we named him "Tiny" . He was there when I joined the marines. When later in life I needed a place to fall back on & went home, tiny was still there. Altogether, tiny was just over 20 when he passed.
My Mom cried for weeks. I cried too. Tiny was such a special cat, a true friend & a beloved member of our family.
I know he's sitting on God's window sill, soaking up the sun, & purring down upon us all with his never ending love.

I had two standard poodles, born 12 months apart and died within 4 months of each other... one at 12 and one at 13.
I still have one stray cat that adopted us when she was a kitten. She's in the house all the time now and will be 5 years old in May.
We have rescued dozens of cats and several dogs in the past... so I guess you could say we have foster animals too, who have since gone on to be in wonderful adoptive homes.
Each one took a piece of my heart when it left though. I sure do love animals.... lots more than the majority of people I've met in my lifetime. And the humans that I do like? They're mostly animal people. ;D

I grew up with a great St. Bernard named Samantha.
I remember when we adopted her, she and I ran around a coffee table and jumped over my little brother, who was then an infant (I was about 4 or so).
When we got her home, she took to family life very well, though I had to teach her to dig. (Mom still reminds me of this)
Sam was a really great nanny, keeping us away from danger while Mom tended the garden and all the other arcane (to a young'un, anyway) work she did.
She was almost 12 years old when she went into surgery for cancer. I was a volunteer at the large/small animal clinic at the time, so I was there when she went under for the last time.

Our Rotty Brando....13 yrs old. Quite an old guy for a rotty. Died of heart failure, no structural issues for him he was a FINE german breed.
He was the best farm dog ever.
Never even thought of bothering chickens or any other living, as long as he knew they lived here.
We have a Jack Russell now...a good farm dog too, gathers the chickens up in the Eve for us.....smart girl!
Oh, though, she kills birds that get into the chicken coop.
Oh well....gotta have some fun

I had a pet mouse for about an hour untill I fed it to our cat doughnut. Now doughnut is about 19 and still going strong. We found her because someone dumped her off by the farm. She only had one eye , thats why we named her doughnut. I never got a chance to name the mouse , darn cat anyhow.

My dad had a beagle that lived to be almost 17. He was by far the best rabbit dog I have ever known. Poor old Sam was nearly blind and deaf, but still in good health when he died. Losing Sam was something I will never forget, it was the first time I saw my dad cry. :-/

My son has a female Quaker parrot which is 18 years old. She thinks that she is my son's mate and will attack anyone who comes near him. The parrot and my daughter-in-law have been at war for all of the 18 years. I'm not sure which one is meaner.

Seymour was our orange cat. Got him when he could still fit in my shoe. He could fight. He would whoop anything. Coons, cats, dogs and people. He used to come home with half an ear, and patches of skin missing. It always grew back though. He died a very old cat. Must have been well over 20.
We also had a miniature grayhound named Apache. He hung on until about the ripe age of 25 or so.

Update from when this was posted, two weeks ago I lost my last golden retriever, he was 15 years and 3 months old. I still am having a hard time with it and find it very hard to talk about. The love that we had for Dillon, knew no bounds.
He was the oldest Golden that our Vet had ever taken care of. Their lifespan usually runs around 10 to 12 years.

had a little Cairn ( just like Toto..toooo cute!) that lived to 16. actually I made the decision to put him down cause of severe arthritis pain. otherwise, I think he would have lived longer. my son has a red-eared slider turtle that he bought when he was 9. he saved his allowance for 'Terry'. well....my son is now 30, and Terry has been around! lol she went to college, and then has experienced a few apartments in her day. she is as young looking as years ago. (something people should know if they get a turtle.....they live forever!) :)

When i divorced in 1990, i came out of it with the mortgage and my husbands 3 cats ::) ::) ::)
The last one died last year at the grand old age of 26. :o
He was half siamese, looked like a regular tom cat but had the siamese howl. Hated my dog though he had known him for 20 years. Got constipated twice a month and i had to give him enemas, His favourite "litter tray " was my big lemon tree.
Boy, and i truly miss him sooooo much.
As I used to say each night.
Night , night arthur , god bless.
