I see it as a cost saving measure. Why pay for 18 armories when you can consalidate and pay for 4-5.

They are combining several local units and housing them all in a newer, larger, centrally located armory which about a year ago became a military police armory. That makes me nervous with the rumors about the military being trained for civil war.

Cannot quote verbatim the oath but the guts of it

"To defend against all enemies both foreign and domestic..."

I have a feeling a lot of soliders will not follow orders that go against the Constitution. When and if a civil war happens soldiders will go home and fight for there cause. I do not forsee anything like Germany in WWII where the army sent groups to camps.

As far as the armories in Kansas, I think it is a financial issue only.

This State/Country Talk is more for people to discuss their state and related issues that don't apply to others, such as zoning regulation, privacy laws, homeschooling laws, type of land, pricing, etc.... So, I can see why you would have posted it here.

This should be posted either in Current Events or Links. I will leave it since it basically is news related to just the State of Kansas.

The State is in trouble there's no doubt about that. My opinion is that we start to cut back on some of the fluff. Gov's house for instance. Yep I think we need to provide one but if they don't want to clean it then THEY need to pay for the house keeper.
State Cap. cut the staff, and use people on work release to push a broom. Use the ones that have two months left to go and are on work release for non-personal, non-violent crimes. If that doesn't work then advise everybody in the office that they will have to start cleaning them. The Capitol staff is for the common grounds areas. not your office.
Next. Who here gets paid to drive to work? Same thing applies. I use my car to get to my job. My employer doesn't give me a gas card or let me tap his gas tanks because I drive my car to work. It is MY understanding that the Reps get gas cards to drive to the Cap. when they have to go. Sorry but there is a place on taxes for mileage, use it. Now understand I have NOT confirmed this so take it with a grain of salt. I however am not sure of where to confirm it, if someone wants to help out on that issue I'll make the call and we can get it figured out.

Lastly. There are alot of armories that simply are so outdated or have issues that nothing or very little is kept there. If that is the case then yes I can see closing them. Consolidating everything does help on the costs. It also is a hit to the small towns that are seeing them close. There isn't a good way to loose weight, you just have to resist the urge to eat so much and start working out. Same way with saving money.

Poacher is on the right track.

Here is my idea:

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Senator Sam Brownback
245 N. Waco, Suite 240
Wichita, KS 67202

Dear Senator Brownback, November 22, 2009

Greetings from XXXXXXXX, Kansas. As you consider your run for Kansas Governor, I wish to extend an idea for you to use as part of your platform. I believe this platform should include tax reform. More specifically, a reform on property taxes.

Property ownership is a right of the Kansas people. If one of our citizens decides to save his or her hard-earned money and purchase a piece of property, they should be able to do so. All without having to pay anyone else an annual tribute to keep said property. Unfortunately, in our state, we have to pay the local government an annual tribute to keep our homes, all with the threat of loosing our homes by government force if we do not pay. Because of this, actual private ownership of our homes does not exist in Kansas!

There is an answer to this problem, which I believe will gain the popular support of the people if used: eliminate property tax and shift that revenue loss to a slight increase in Kansas income tax (while changing all laws pertaining thereto). In addition to this, eliminate the offices of tax appraisers for all 105 Kansas counties and eliminate the Kansas tax appeal court system.

The benefits from doing these few things would be enormous:

It would eliminate an entire level of bureaucracy and the costs associated thereto (105 county appraisers, 105 county appraiser staffs, 105 county appraiser office costs, 105 county appraiser vehicle fleets and their associated fuel and maintenance costs, as well as the need for the property tax court system).
It would reaffirm the property rights of the citizens of the state of Kansas.
It would create the prospect of actual property ownership, drawing more people into our state as well as encouraging our own citizens to buy homes.
People would not allow as many family farmstead homes to be destroyed to avoid paying property taxes.
More people will make their homes look better, thus improving the image of our communities. As it stands now, many people do not, because they do not want their property taxes increased from a better looking home.
There will no longer be government officials (tax assessors) coming to our homes unannounced and uninvited, and walking around our homes and properties. This would lower the animosity our citizens feel towards their local governments.
Older retired people will be able to stay in their homes without having to worry about being able to afford their annual tribute to the local government, and not having their homes and property taken away from them; or being forced to sell them.
The costs of services such as fire, police, EMS and schools would be equitably distributed among our citizens as opposed to only property owners having to pay for them.

Sir, I think such a platform would be not only beneficial to Kansans, but also to your campaign. It would reinforce our property rights, and bring down government bureaucratic costs at the same time. It would be a win-win situation for everyone.

If you have any questions, I would be more than happy to discuss them with you; please call me at xxx-xxx-xxxx. Thank you for your time and attention.

Sincerely,

XXXXXXXXXXX

The above letter is one I sent to my future Governor. I am not a fan of income or sales tax, but I hate property tax even more. I believe we could shift from property tax to sales and or income tax, then eventually ween ourselves from those revenues to some extent in the future.

I took the oath very seriously....and the U.S. constitution even more seriously...

I won't go against the constitution...but God won't be able to help those destroying my country. America is in danger.

Nuff said there.

TrackKs I love that letter. I was also informed that this will be the last year for meals on wheels and other services in my county unless we find away to provide them. They have started cutting from the old.So sad.

Thanks. I am going to start sending this letter to legislators and senators to start making a ruckus. I posted it on a local board, and it made some people mad. One person was thanking me for asking my senator to cut his wife's job (smart a**, he was; as Yoda would say).
