Is this an easy home repair? Basically, how do you do it?

Yes, my house is self destructing,
Pam

Those springs are under a LOT of tension.
If you do it yourself be very very careful.
I have done a couple and they can get away from you quick.
Some very good advice here.
Starting with don't do it yourself. :)

Thanks for the info. I see from reading this article that mine is a broken extension spring, not the hyper dangerous torsion spring.

I did have a company replace both extension springs yesterday and I see by the article that I was charged the going rate per spring (about $150 per spring). I talked the guy down from this price, but I now see that he was not out of line.

We used to have a wonderful repairman. He relied on word of mouth, drove a beat up pickup truck, wouldn't charge for simple repairs that didn't require parts and was a good soul. He charged fairly for his work and only enough to make a decent living. Unfortunately, he retired:(

Bruce of Bruce's Garage Doors, are you out there?

One of my doors has the same springs your's does, and over the years i've replaced the springs on it two times...

You have to change them in pairs, and the springs on mine are about 20 bucks each. They aren't hard to change with a com-along and some light chain to keep things safe.

I'm glad you ended up finding someone to safely do your's for you.
