Anyone have a Mountain Cur? I'd be interested in any personal experience info on the breed.

Had a catahoula, which I understand to have a similar temperament. Very bright dog, but VERY STUBBORN and strong willed. Extremely hard working, and very protective, almost to the point of being aggressive. I would get one again, but only if I had at least an acre or two to let it run. Hope this helps...

My wife & I are driving down to WV tomorrow to pick up our mountain cur puppy, Scooter. *I picked her out a couple weeks ago and she is now ready to leave her mother.

Catahoulas are very similar and are also special dogs. *I tend to get away from the "easy" dogs like Labs. ;D *Star was, of course, a terrific Airedale and we lost her just last summer when she developed cancer. *She was just 5 years old and I sure do miss her. *Another dog can never replace Star, but I'm praying that Scooter will make her own special place in my heart.

Mtn curs Are great dogs . I have had several over the years, for everything to chasing Mtn lion to Coyote and even run with the beagles when I had them. They have a hard headed mentality but mine all came around with in the first 14 mos. I currently use Airedales and Love them But every time I come across a difficult track or even start looking thru Pics i contemplate getting another. http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a350/NVWolfer/twister.jpg

The new puppy is definitely stubborn, but so was my Airedale. ;D I guess I like a challenge or I'd just get a Lab. ;)

I've got an 8 mo. old BMC, and he is the hardest headed sob I've ever ran across. Destructive too. We got him so my son would have a protector when he was out exploring. Bandit is an extremely difficult dog to train, back sasses, is a thief, and way more tenacious than I'd of imagined. Very impressive jaws with those jagged teeth, and crushing power. All the neighbors love him, but I doubt I'll get another, too much trouble.

Mountain curs can be demanding for sure. Scooter has had a couple of hard headed times, but we are working them out. She is definitely a family dog and very protective, and she hunts hard for a 6-month old puppy.

If your MC is a problem, you might not be showing him that you are the big dog in the pack. It's not easy.

I got the alpha-male thing settled, and Bandit does some serious sucking up when he's in trouble. However, he will still do things he knows he's not supposed to do, like eating tissue paper from the garbage, grabbing the dish towels and playing keep away, keep away with almost anything in fact, chewing up siding, or anything else in reach.

He starts obedience classes next Sunday, and they're to last for two months.

Jim, I can relate! Scooter is really a sweetie, but she still likes to swipe a towel or a shoe and play keep away.

I guess the tough part is taming them a bit without stopping their natural hunting instinct.

I had a mountain cur called look out. Not because he was a good protector but every time my friends saw him coming they would yell " look out " He loved kids but he could sense a cat a mile away and if he could see one it ended up dead most of the time. My barn cats couldn't breed fast enough to stay alive.

Well, Bandit has greatly improved since the obedience training. The instructor said he came the furtherest, and was her star pupel. I'm still thinking of changing his name to "Dammit Bandit", because that's what he hears most of the time. He strolls thru the invisible fence when he feels like it and is the toughest and strongest dog I've ever owned. He's mouthy and hard headed, but the wife and boy love him to death. He is protective, because no rough housing is allowed by him at all with the boy. Son's friends don't like it.
