Has anybody here started a housecleaning or construction cleaning business? I'm curious about how you got started.

OK for what its worth.
I don't have a cleaning business, but I did clean model homes when I was in High School. You could contact developers in the area and ask if they have a service, are they looking for a service, are they taking bids?
Same for construction clean-up - just contact the company and ask how they handle the clean-up. Start a conversation with them. Let them know you are responsible, thorough, and reliable.
I know many people who have cleaning ladies the main reason they get booted is because they get lazy - figure out what the home owner dosen't really notice and then stop doing that every time. Next thing you know the top of the bookcase or fridge hasn't been cleaned in a year and the dust is an inch thick. Also if you're going to clean houses emphasize things you'll do that other cleaners wont - like clean windows, work with home owner on spring cleaning cabinets, stuff like that. Be pro-active when you get clients. My sis has a cleaning lady and she always calls a few days ahead to remind sis. She loves that.
I do know that cleaning people turn over often, so keep in contact with people, show that you're the best person for the job and will do a better job than others.
You can also try posting on church bulletin boards or local free papers.

Good advice. Its human nature to get lazy but I pretty much hate dirt and I've cleaned for years, just never on my own. I am also going to hit the property management companies and get move outs, with some luck.

The move out cleaning is a good idea too. When DD was in grade school a classmates mom got laid off and decided to start a cleaning service for people moving. She charged $350 (can't remember if that was per day or per job). If I remember correctly she even helped people get organized to move - declutter, going through closets, cabinets, drawers stuff like that. Basically getting rid of stuff the home-owner didn't want to take with them or pay to move.
You could contact real estate agents, mortgage companies, moving companies that sell moving supplies, give them a packet of your info with your services.
The lady above started with word of mouth. Last time I ran into her she had a few employees and was doing well.
Good luck. Let us know how it progresses.
