Ahhh! The joys of having fresh home grown tomatoes long before the neighbors! :D

Trouble is....many early tomatoes are seriously lacking in the flavor department.

Here are some of my favorites...all with good flavor......with approximate days to maturity from transplant....all are open-pollinated.

Whippersnapper Cherry (55 days) Pink red cherry, small compact plants.
Forest Fire (45-50 days) Red fruits to 3 inches, small determinate plant.
Sophie's Choice (55 days) Orange/Red fruits up to 8 ounces on short determinate plants.
Kimberly (55 days) 1-2 ounce red fruits on compact indeterminate plants.
Aurora (60 days) Well flavored red indeterminate.
Morden Yellow (55 Days) Orange/Yellow fruits. Determinate.
Taxi (65 days) Bright yellow fruits.

I don't have one yet. In fact, I don't even have a favorite tomato of any kind, still experimenting.
This year, Amish Paste for sauce tomatoes, and Prudens Purple for a slicer, I just pick any cherry variety, as we don't eat them, they are for the dog. He picks his own.

Both are great tomatoes!

I tried half a dozen Mountain Fresh last year, and although everything had blight problems, I really was not impressed with them for flavor or size, they were nice and uniform in size and color though, I won't plant those again.

I planted "sweet 100" 2yrs ago and they were great little tomato's I like the smaller ones for canning just about tennis ball size or a little smaller. We didn't plant last year with the work on getting the house done but LOOKOUT this year.Ken

Bloody Butcher is NOT my favorite for an early. In my garden, they did well, production-wise, but were real full of seeds. Still, they were early and did better than Sub-arctic Plenty. I'm trying a new one this year Mountain Princess I think is the name, I better check on that. I really don't need an early tomato, I get a lot of main-crop ones. Usually I can wait, lol.

I ordered Amish Paste this year from Seed Savers Exchange.
They have been my best, and favorite tomato to can. When you open the jar in February......it smells like July!!

What would you recommend for Zone 5, Central Indiana? I would love to try an 'early' tomato that is a slicer, with pretty big flavor.

My daughter grows cherry tomatoes, so she has something to snack on when she is weeding and tending the garden!! Otherwise we really don't eat cherry tom's.
