I am often wondering, since I am not what is called a 'dog person' . we have neighbors with all kinds of dogs. (some as many as 17!!!)they are in narrow kennels with a doghouse and never get out. When you get to their house the ruckus is unbelievable. they feel sorry for the dogs and feed them for years. The reason is that here in the country there are loads of people who do not spay their animals and let them breed indiscriminately, then drive out on isolated roads and dump the unwanted offspring. that is how we got our first dog. dh is enamored with it. he is indeed a very smart and pretty dog, but you have to watch him, he has a weak streak for chasing the turkeys , chickens etc when we are not watching, has killed several (about 8) and I have found him to steal eggs out of a nest. I don't care if he can give paw and roll over. Now another dog has showed up and I can't help it, I do not like that dog. I do not like it's looks and I do not like it's personality. and I feel irritated if I think it is going to stay around here for 10-15 years. I would like to pick out my own dog. In a way I feel guilty, but also frustrated and angry. How would you all handle this? dh has a soft spot and I am pretty fed up with the mutts. and irritated with those irresponsible louts.
dh is gone for the day and already mutt 1 has chased the turkeys, while mutt 2 is lying on the doormat, not moving out of the way, looking up with 'woe is me' blue green eyes and pink snout. I want a serious, reliable dog, and not a bunch of them to keep the dog food industry in business. Excuse me for venting.
I also do not like the idea of tying a dog up all day. Mutt 1 is part Australian cattle dog and has unbelievable energy, the other pup is a lame duck by comparison.

Mutt one needs some serious obedience training (which he obviously hasn't gotten or he would not chase the turkeys/chickens because you could just tell him no) and no dogs shoul ever be left outside without supervision. The ignorant folks will argue that until they are blue in the face but the simple fact is, if your dog is being supervised it cannot hurt anyone, anything, or be hurt by anyone or anything. It cannot escape, it cannot dig holes in your flowers, it cannot eat something poisonous, it can't steal eggs...etc etc etc.

All of the other mutts...call animal control or you can take them on your own to the local humane society or city/county shelter.

It happens all the time where I last lived. Had to practice the three S's quite a lot.

I'd dearly love for it to be legal "to practice the three S's" on the scum who dump dogs almost on our doorstep!

AHHHHH, that makes sense. But we never shovel. We take them off and let nature "get rid" of the evidence. There are too many places that we can dispose of the evidence and it feeds the many buzzards around here. We don't mind the buzzards. They do a good job getting rid of the innards of our butchering days when we do hogs or cows. So anything to keep the buzzards happy we do. ;)

Living in the country we have had alot of dogs dumped on us through the years, some we kept and the others we were lucky to find homes for.
I would love to practice the SSS on the ones that do this to us ones in the country, once they have dumped these dogs it becomes our responsibility.
I will have to say, the ones we kept became loving members of our family, but it takes alot of work, they came from places that the owners weren't smart enough to teach them anything, so with alot of hard work and teaching them different commands they became very valuable pets.
I hope that it will all work out for you.

I know what you mean! I just posted my own rant on this subject because I am currently trying to find homes for two pups that someone decided ought to find their own food, and I had to rescue them from the highway! This area (SW Missouri near Branson) has a real dog problem because the jerks around here who think it is "cruel" to neuter a male dog (I think the men take it personally!) don't think it is cruel to leave the the offspring generated through this irresponsible practice (or lack thereof) to starve to death when they dump them in some out of the way place!!! Out of sight out of mind, I guess. Then they go out and buy some expensive pure bred hunting dog for the prestige of having something to brag about with their drinking buddies, while those of us who feel sorry for the mutts are cleaning up the mess they leave behind! I don't hold with shooting the dogs - afterall, its not their fault they were born unlucky enough to have an irresponsible creep for a "master' - but I would love to take those jerks out and dump them naked in some deep woods somewhere and see how well THEY find food and shelter! Most of them wouldn't know their arses from a hole in the ground, and they'd probably starve in a week. I, for one, would not mourn their passing! >:( >:( >:(

People who dump animals--should be horse-whipped--cant tell you how many I have cared for--had to put down because of their serve illness---distemper etc---

I have cured mange---wormy dogs---and geezzzz the pregant females I have fed till they whelped--then taken the litters to the humane shelters.

One observation I have made----People who are cruel to animals are Cruel to humans also.
