My 8 month old Catahoula Cur puppy wouldn't come to me yesterday when I called to her. This was after Jury Duty yesterday, around 6 p.m., when I finally got home. I always call for her first, and she usually meets me at the front porch. Not yesterday.

I found her underneath the back porch.... cowering. Like I said, she's just a puppy, even though she's a bigger breed of dog, she's still just a baby.

I didn't know what was wrong with her, except that she refused to climb the three or four steps on my back porch and come to me. She's never done that. I went down the steps and she was holding up her left back leg off the ground. I assumed at that point that she'd gotten in the road in front of our house and got "dust-rolled" - ran over, but escaping with only minor injuries. That was my a$$umption.

Her leg was very.... tender... to the touch, so I didn't insist on her letting me examine her right then. Instead I picked her up (about 50 pounds right now) and carried her up the steps to the back porch, locking the gate behind me. I laid her on a couple of rugs, and got her some extra food and water to make sure she'd be okay for the night. I spoke with her for a minute, and comforted her, loved on her some. Then, as with all my babies that get "rolled", I left her alone for the evening.

This morning before leaving for the courthouse, I went out to check on her... and found an entry wound.... it looked like a .22 caliber bullet wound. Yes, I've seen these all my life, they're very common.

Let me say this about my puppy. Because I have babied her all her life since she was 7 weeks old, she is nothing more than just that - a BABY... a big baby, but a baby nonetheless. She only barks at people when they come into our yard, not the road. She rarely leaves our yard for any reason, she doesn't even follow the other dogs we have when they leave.

So I guess, yesterday, when I was in court... she might have followed the other dogs down the road, I don't know. It would have been a first for her, I know that. And my sweet baby is the one that got shot.

I'm so mad right now I could cuss.

I have examined her wound, yes, she let me, and it's a clean wound. It's a little swollen, and I administered some antibiotics from the vets office, and she'll get those three times a day until they're all gone. The wound itself will heal in about a week, two at the outside most, but you can bet, this little coonass woman is HOT, and if and when I find out who shot my baby........ there'll be hell to pay.

And there ain't a mad enough smilie for me to use. This l'il redhead is piZZed.

I fully understand you being hot. I wish you knew who shot your baby so you could show them how it feels. I hope and pray your baby heals soon and isn't in too much pain.

You mention other dogs, is there any chance that they are travelling onto other people's property? Someone may feel that they are causing problems or have the potential to cause problems.

I have to wonder if there is such a thing as a clean gunshot wound. *I've noticed while cleaning quail that each wound is filled with little bits of feather. *I find that kind of puzzling. *How many feathers could the buck shot go through on the way to the bird?

How were they able to shoot her? Was she outside? If you weren't home she should not have been anywhere that someone could possibly shoot her without breaking into your home.
Basically you were asking for it. Yes people are stupid and cruel, but as an adult you should know better than to trust the world...it is your job to protect your pets, they are no more capable of defending themselves from the sick freaks out there than a 3 year old child is.

Shame on you for allowing your baby to GET shot.

panzer, I feel I should come to the defense of gypho, not because I know her, but because we also have outside dogs. Our dogs are the first line of defense on our property. They are the ones who warn us if someone is here, and don't come in and hide in our house while we are gone. They protect our property while we are gone. We would NEVER put our dogs into harms way, as we love them like family members, but they are for our protection also.

To say that Gypho allowed her baby to get shot was just wrong. >:( Shame on you for saying that.

"She rarely leaves our yard for any reason,"
Soooo. she does leave the yard? Maybe she left and wanted to play with somebody's cat or chickens. A 50lb dog "playing" with my cats or chickens in my yard would probly get the same treatment.

She's still a puppy herself... and btw, she was raised with cats and other dogs... so no, she's not an attack dog, but she's my big baby.

Yes I've seen her leave the yard... she goes into the woods directly behind our house with the other dogs here... they have 236 acres to play. But I've never seen her follow the others down the road. She got lost once and was gone for 3 weeks... after that episode, she's more of a homebody than I am!

I don't know what gyphos situation is and it's none of my business. Does sound like 200 acres plus is plenty of room for a farm dog to roam. My dogs leave the yard all the time as there is no yard fence, I have never seen them leave the 240 acre home place and if they did that is no reason for someone to shoot one of them. Dogs very quickly learn what is "theirs" and what is not. Sounds to me like some idiot with a gun just wanted to shoot something and the pup was an easy target. There are plenty of that type around.
I find it a little strange as to why anyone would think that dogs should live indoors. What about cats, horses, cattle, sheep, chickens and such, got them in the house too.
My little Rat Terrier stays in the house, but the big dogs wouldn't come in on a bet.

too many people with too many guns and not enough space.

I love dogs. But I am starting to consider shooting one. A large black lab that keeps getting in my garbage. There are several strays around here but we know its this big lab. Neighbors have seen it turn over their garbage and mine. I'm tired of picking it up. As much as I hate to do it, I'm really considering taking this lab out.

Pour a cup full of ammonia on top of your garbage. The dog will soon learn that your trash doesn't appeal to it. That will keep the dog away from your trash and keep you from having to shoot it.

Do you know who owns the lab? If so, go to the owner and put them on warning that if their dog turns over your garbage again that THEY will come pick it up. If that doesn't work call the police/sheriff and make a report. That will give you legal standing if something does have to be done.

Good advice, hillbilly_mom.

BamaGator, I've been in your shoes before. Wanted to, but just couldn't. Not to say that I won't if it's attacking my family members.... even if it's my own.

Just that my puppy is not dangerous, she's very loving to everyone. Not much of a guard dog, LOL.

Hillbilly Mom, I do know who the dog belonged to when it was a puppy. They have just let the dog run loose though since they got bored with it. Wont do any good to talk to them.
Gypho, Catahoulas are beautiful dogs, I hope yours is ok.

Thanks BamaGator.... and yes, she's improving daily. She started putting a little weight on it yesterday, and whining to get off the back porch. She's been locked in for about a week now, gettin' pumped fulla antibiotics and Purina.

All I could think was OMG :'( ! when I read the subject line. I am so glad that it wasn't more serious and that she will be okay!
Neighbor's younger daughter has a Catahoula/Pitt or Catahoula/Rottweiler, not sure which, mix and she's the most loveable thing around. She thinks she's a lap dog and just doesn't understand why she doesn't fit in anyone's lap. However I sure wouldn't want to be someone she knows as she's very protective of her "people". I just adore her and I've already told them that if something happens where they can't keep her in the family she's mine! They've agreed because she knows me.
Hope you find out who did it and kick their butt >:( . (gotta be pc here so I don't get Oliver riled up about my language!)
