We live in a county that has an animal shelter, but they will only take dogs and not cats. We have a lot of cats here, we are renting right now and they are everywhere, right now we are feeding no less than 9, thats a fairly stable number, we have one with 3 kittens, a younger cat, and at least 4 other that come around on a regular basis, but there are more in the park, but I guess we aren't in their terrority. I enjoy petting and playing with them, but I just don't understand why the county will only take dogs and not cats. Maybe you think I shouldn't feed them, but we are softies and can't bear to see any animal go hungry. I go on freebie websites and get a lot of cat food samples and coupons that way. When we do move (don't know when that will be) but when we do, we will lightly take some of them with us. We are cat poor right now ;D, I can't give them away.
What would you do? feed or not feed?
I'm like you and a softie so I end up with drop offs, strays and I swear each cat tells their friends and those cats stop by and found out I feed well and tell their friends. I have no answers for you but it is unfortunate that your bird population will take a beating with all the cats around.

Another old softie here, can't stand to see an animal starve to death.
Years ago the story goes that Hobo's use to mark the mailbox's at people's houses that would feed someone that is hungry. I think the animals around here mark my house also, because I sure do get my share, and yes I feed them, the dogs I have found homes for and once in a while I can find a farmer with a barn that will take the extra cats.

you say when you leave you will take some of them, so I assume the rest will be left to starve? There is a natural life cycle for any animal, when we interfear we disrupt that cycle. Once you start feeding, say nine of them and they start breeding , pretty soon you have eighteen. put enough down so that you can manage the others and take with you when you leave. And for Gods sake get them fixed.

The ones we wouldn't take with us are the one's we can't catch. *The mama cat with the kitten's hiss's at me everytime she sees me, even if I'm just standing in the doorway, and won't come near and runs like the devil is on her heels if I take a step toward her, although she will eat the food I set out, the kittens I think will get use to me and let me touch them now at least a little.
Yes, we have plans to have them fixed, at least as I've already said the ones I can catch. *I don't think they'd strave to death, they would likely go to another trailer in the park where someone would feed them, or the people that move into here might even feed them, but I don't think they would strave, just might be hungry for a day or two until they find that soft hearted person.
